Disk are incorrectly read or not seen in Vista 64 Ultra

Vista can't read manifactured DvD's and will not see Blank disks.

I read through the MS kb article and it doesn't apply because in the registry UpperFilters and Lowerfilters are not listed. Tried using Nero but it is not compatable with Vista. (humph, imagine that)

In Device mgr Dvd is listed as TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S202J ATA Device
Driver is from 6/21/2006

Tried to update driver but will not says it is most up to date driver available. Uninstalled drive and reinstall did nothing to resolve problem.

The DVD drive is brand new and so is the PC and windows Vista Ultimate 64.
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E7300 @2.66 Ghz, 4 gigs ram.

Most of the time it can't even read any disk put in, no auto play nothing, Turned atuo play and turned it off no real difference. Often times in Windows Explorer after a few tries it may see files on the disk then I can use the setup if it's there and it will install program. Sometimes it will read home burned disk and it other times it fails to see the exact same disk. Often times it sees a manufactured disk as a blank disk and ask if I wanted to burn something.

OK so is this a Vista issue or not?

I also have a strange issue using IE 7 in that sometimes hotlinks on pages are not clickable, however on the same hot link (such as search on your page) if I right click on it and open in new window it responds fine. STRANGE...Very Strange....

Thanks for any real help if provided....:geek:

Hello Gumby, and welcome to Vista Forums.

I went to the Samsung website and there is a SB02 version firmware update from 5-22-2008 available for you SH-S202J drive. It may help you.

When there, click on the Firmware Downloads link and type in SH-S202J, then click on Search.

Hey thanks big time for the very quick response and detailed help.
I should have thought to check their site and thought I did but I must have missed it.

So I downloadd and installed it and let it reboot as instructed, on checking the DM it still shows the driver date from 2006.
Never the less I inserted a movie disk and although it didn't auto run it did show in Windows Explorer the disk title, which is more than what it did before.
I was able to run the movie so that's an improvement, I will have to see how it does with disks that have a install program.

I got a sick feeling it's a Vista issue though. I like most of the new look and feel of Vista but hope these kind of bugs don't make me revert back to XP. I hear that's it's a really bad idea to try and use XP Pro 64 bit as they never seemed to work out the kinks in it.

Thanks again, this seems like a good site to find helpfull yet nonjudgemental help form people, which is a rare thing to find on the net these days.

You're welcome Gumby. If you still have issues with disks that have a install program, then you might uninstall the DVD drive from within Device Manager. Afterwards, restart the computer and let Vista reinstall it to see if that helps.

Seemed to work ok for a bit but then it reverted back ....even a HP Printer driver disk wasn't seen correctly, saw it as a blank disk and asked to format it. So I said yes then it replied that it was write protected....*Gee Really?*
After that then it sees the info on the disk but I can never get any disk to auto run and never shows the title in windows explorer unless I reboot.
Now perhaps it's just me but I don't see this as an improvement over ANY other OS by MicroSquish.:sarc:

Yes this is a brand new machine ...I also updated all the drivers I could, like the Video driver that recently came out on Nov 15th for my Gfoce 9500.

Strange windows that windows says that all the drivers are up to date though.

Hi Gumby22, welcome to the board.

I would like to point out that brand new machine is usually the one needs BIOS and chipset drivers updates, so are the other hardware drivers such as GPU. I believe Brink was suggesting go to the motherboard manufacturer and locate the appropriate latest BIOS and chipset drivers for an update.

Please post back and let us know how things turn out.

Ok, I'm not saying this is the case here, but let me tell you what happened to me.
I had the exact same problem when I bought a new system when vista had just come out. Except I had vista 32. I thought it was vista. After a week of looking for a solution myself, I finally just went back to the shop, and they told me they had heard of the problem before, and it was actually a faulty DVD drive. They replaced the drive, and I never had a problem with that computer (nor the drive) again.

So even if this is a brand new drive, it might just be faulty. Never forget that it might simply have a manufacturing fault which didn't show up in their regular checking procedure. Only way to figure this out is to put the drive in another machine, and see if it does the same thing there.

Also, it might sound totally stupid, but have you tried taking out the cables and putting them back in? sometimes loose cable or faulty positioning is at fault. Also, it might be that the cables used (ide or SATA these days) have a tiny little break in them. You might want to think about replacing the cable all together to see if that helps.

To be honest though, if you've updated the firmware, I'm thinking it's probably a faulty drive or a loose cable.

@bruce: I have NEVER updated my bios. EVER. I would only do this if I have issues which the updated bios says it would fix. I would certainly never recommend it to a novice user, as a lot of things can go wrong. Besides, I have found that my motherboard usually comes with a recent BIOS.
(btw... maybe I'm just scared to upgrade my bios..... what are the benefits anyways if I'm not having any issues with my machine.... though in this case there ARE issues)

Good point Day24.

Gumby, as Day24 suggested, you should also check to see if you have a loose or bad cable on the DVD drive. If not, you might test another DVD drive in your computer instead to see how it runs to see if you have a faulty DVD drive.
