replacing a motherboard

My mobo recently went the way of the dodo and I am going to have to replace it. I am keeping everything the same. I am replacing the mobo with an exact duplicate (not upgrading). I am using retail purchased OS software (Vista Ultimate 64-bit). I am not using an OEM computer (I built it myself).

My question is: what do I need to do and how is it going to work?

In addition to what locoeng has posted
If it is an Identical motherboard you are replacing with see what happens when you first boot - If you are lucky vista might just boot without a re-install, changing a Mobo will normally require at least a re-activation and normally a re-install, but if Vista sees nothing as changed then it should just boot

Replace the mobo and boot. Reinstalling the OS should not be needed. I've done this a number of times, even going so far as replacing a mobo with a newer version of the same chipset (old P4S333 with P4S533 / SiS chipset). Windows never had a problem. If it's the same, even if it's a revision number difference, you shouldn't have a problem. But make sure you configure the BIOS exactly the same to minimize problems.

I had to RMA my mobo this spring and when I replace the old with the new a reinstall was required...maybe I was just unlucky :(

I had to reinstall windows after replacing my broken motherboard but thats because it was totally different (upgrade from ddr2 to ddr3).

In your case you should get by without having to format.

Well, I replaced the mobo and booted. At first I was able to enter the BIOS setup. Then it locked in the setup. I booted again and let it boot normally. I got to the screen that said there was an error loading windows where it gives you the option to load in safe mode, etc. I used the arrow key to select an option and as soon as I did, it locked and wouldn't respond to any keyboard inputs just like it did in the BIOS setup. I rebooted again and now it won't even go past the BIOS screen where it displays your mobo logo. I can't even hit delete to enter the setup.

Any ideas?

I would check all connections and components to make sure they are secure and correctly connected, pay special attention to make sure the heatsink-fan assemble is securely set with thermal paste properly applied. Try with minimal components. Even better, do a bench test. Wonder what reason caused the replacement of the mobo. Post back.

I even put my Windows CD in to try and see if that did anything, and even though the CD-ROM drive looked like it was reading the CD, nothing happened...

You probably didn't plug the CD Drive into the same port as it was originally.

I ran across this when I was ghosting the contents of a (slightly) defective hard drive to the replacement. Changing the position of the SATA cable on the motherboard produced those symptoms.

Hi

Did you follow all Static Electricity precautions?
Are all the cards and RAM seated firmly and locked into position?
Is the CPU fan plugged into the PROPER CPU Fan plug on the MB? (If not it will NOT boot without this fan plug inserted properly.....check this)
Does this MB use a secondary CPU power plug (4 pin square, not 4-inline)? If so, is this plugged in? And if you need this plug, make sure you don't mistake the 4 pin GPU power plug for this one, they can be inserted into this plug by accident. It takes a bit of forcing to do that but I've seen it happen.

I doubt you would even get to the BIOS screen without the CPU fan plugged in or the CPU power plug inserted properly. Just wouldn't get there.

Hi Jim

It may...it may not (fan plug). Tell you the truth I don't know for sure that it will or won't since it's never happened to me. It's possible if the CPU fan plug is in another fan connector, it may post to BIOS..I guess that depends on the MB.
About the power plug...heheh...I haven't tried that one either..and I'm not about too anytime soon..LOL
