Q9650 Intel Quad Core listed as unknown device?

I have updated my bios ,update came out last month, and still under the device manager it shows "unknown device". The BIOS recognizes it and the Sytem under Control Panel recognizes it. Anyone with the same issue? I don't have any performance problems and didn't even with the old bios. :sleepy: I attached a screenshot.

I have looked on the net and this seems to be a fairly common problem. One suggestion that came up few times that seemed to work was to uninstall the unknown devices in Device Manager and then run a refresh or reboot. :geek:

Well it sort of worked. The first processor it views as the Quad core but the remaining 3 processors listed still say unknown. When you go to update driver it tells you "you have the latest driver" duh! I tried to uninstall each of the four but still get the same result.

There was a lot of chatter about Intel's Bios needing updating for the Q9650. I presume this is a new rig, CPU and MOBO? Are you familiar with the process of updating your MOBO Bios?

Sorry, re-read your first post. But still, maybe there is a BIOS problem?

Well , new processor, went from a Core 2 Duo to the Quad. While I was at it I added the BFG Nvidia 260 OCX instead of the two 8800 GTX's in SLI. Then I got stupid and bought a 40" LCD HDTV for a monitor and a G15 keyboard. My wife got a little upset. This was the first BIOS flash I have done on this board but it is so easy now with the Nvidia tools it's hard to go wrong. I would be worried but Intel's tool cannot even figure out what the processor is! If I was having performance issues I would be worried. I am just a little anal but I am in therapy. :D

I wouldn't flash the Mobo Bios from within Windows, this has given me many problems in the past. Best way to flash the bios is from a floppy drive at system start up. If you don't have a floppy drive (like me) you can either burn the image to disc or use a USB thumb drive/flash card. Your Motherboard maker's site should have intructions on how to flash your bios using these setups.

It may not be your problem but it's worth a go. For now i would try turning off your computer and resetting the Mobo by using the CMOS jumper.

I am pretty sure the problem is with Bios, not Vista. However everything I read suggests that the Quad will run quite happliy on your board. Get CPU-Z and give it a run to check how the Quad is performing in Vista. There is no overclocking involved is there? You might try resetting the Bios to it's defaults:geek:

BIOS needs to be updated before VISTA is installed to properly recognize hardware. (From what I have read elsewhere)
