    Hard Drives

The procedure?

1. Install new RAM
2. Back up data
3. Format hard drive
4. Install Vista x64

There is no "upgrade" from 32-bit to 64-bit. It's a clean install only.

Vista 64 is at least as stable as WinXP.
I have not had a single problem with it and compared to my old WinXP with 4Gbs/3.2gbs ram Vs Vista 64 with 8Gbs ram it is noticeably faster.

Vista X64 is entierly stable. Macs and Linux distros should be so stable. They claim to be, but in real life their nothing but bugs.

You will need to do a clean install to get to x64, but its worth it.

Vista x64 is the bomb!

My main rig runs Vista Ultimate or Server 2008. Depending on which Acronis image I decide to load.
Hi,

New to Vista, having returned to Windows after six years with Linux. Just wanted to comment on the posting above re linux stability.

Linux was unstable at one time, but for the past couple of years I've run Ubuntu and it has been the most stable o/s I've used - certainly better than XP.

Please note I'm not bashing windows here - I've been amazed by Vista (got a second computer for gaming), particularly after all the bad press it got. I've seen very little I don't like!

But back to the question at hand - I'm using home premium 64 and have yet to strike any problems.

Of course you'll have to make sure your laptop is 64 bit capable in the first place.

Start Menu-Control Panel-Performance Information and Tools-click View And Print Details. It will show you if it's capable or not.

I dont believe you can upgrade laptops... Unless... You are a laptop manufacturer/system builder.

Suggestion - Want performance?
Buy a Desktop :)

But if you have a x64 processor then yes. Upgrade to x64 :)

Anyone can upgrade their laptop to Vista x64. They just have to make sure it's compatible and has about 4GB's of ram.

Not really much of an upgrade because you need to do a clean install of Vista. ;)

I have not seen a laptop with onboard RAM chips for years. These days, they're all SO-DIMMS.

I would verify you can run Vista x64 Ultimate on your laptop with the manufacturer.

But if you have a x64 processor then yes. Upgrade to x64 :)

Every CPU from AMD for about the past 4 years has been x64. Every CPU from Intel for about the past 2 years has been x64.

You can get decent performance on a laptop, these days. Very decent.

Mm.... was unaware that ram chips could be upgraded, my system builder told me its almost impossible to fully assemble a laptop from scratch =/ Guess that tells you not to believe everything you hear.

I didn't say anything about building your own laptop from scratch. I only said that upgrading RAM isn't a big deal in laptops.

Laptops use SO-DIMM's for memory, and it is replacable/upgradable.

Building your own laptop from scratch would pretty much require custom machining tools (for the case and such), and is impractical for sane people.
