Default sidebar gadgets gone!

I have a new Toshiba Satellite laptop and purchased the Norton 360 license and CD. I had problems installing it and Norton remote assistance spent 3 hours on fixing it. This was a couple of days ago. I am not sure exactly what they did.

I just noticed that the gadgets I was using have disappeared from the sidebar. I tried to restore them but the gadget gallery is empty and the "restore default gadgets" button is greyed out. I tried to download and install new gadgets and I accepted all the install warnings, but they never appear on the sidebar or in the gadget gallery. I've searched for a solution and tried the one where you sign into the command prompt and run regvsvr32....dll (etc.) and restarted, but still no luck.

I also don't seem to be able to run Windows Update (I was trying to check there to see if a Windows update might have caused it). Default programs doesn't work either - no response at all when I click on the icon.

I'm starting to think perhaps I should just do a system restore :( although that would be a pain.

Any advice?
Thanks

Well my first thought was your first mistake was installing Norton, you say you even had problems trying to install that.

See what the others have to say but if it was me I'd get rid of Norton, sorry if it's not what you wanted to hear but being around the newsgroups and forums I see so many problems with people who have Norton on their machines ;)

I suggest you do a system restore to a point before your issues started. Somehow you have file corruption

I have spent yet more time Norton Tech support and still can't resolve the problem.

I have tried several times to do a System Restore, even going back to Nov 13/08 which is before I even bought the laptop at Best Buy. I get an error message that(unhelpfully) says "System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's files and settings were not changed. Details: An unspecified error occurred during System Restore."

So I am still having the problem with no gadgets available and also still cannot open programs (like Windows Defaults in the Control Panel), never mind get Norton 360 working.

Any ideas anyone?
Thanks

I think I'm OK now. I rebooted in Safe Mode and ran System Restore and this time it worked. I can now see gadgets in the sidebar and will try installing Norton 360 again!

My Computer

I could be wrong but I believe that Norton can cause problems with System Restore also so that may have been why you were having problems trying to use it.

I think you are correct. I installed various other programs and had no problem, but as soon as I installed Norton, all the problems came back. I uninstalled Norton and everything is OK again. Installed Norton again, and the problems came back again!

Now I'm going to tell Norton I think their product is incompatible with Vista and would like my money back as they don't appear to be able to get it to work.

Cheers and thanks for the advice!

Glad I was able to help, and yes it does seem to be the case that Norton breaks more than it fixes when installed on any Windows version.

Good luck with getting a refund ;)

Fingers crossed that you're one of the lucky ones Jay, Norton doesn't have the best track record since being taken over by Symantec. There are those though that love it but I'm afraid I love my machines too much to inflict Norton anywhere near them ;)

Ive also had this problem as they just decided to disapeer on my desktop!

Does anyone know if theres a way to get the gadgets back on the desktop without doing a restore cause Ive just spent ages getting lots of drivers installed and dont wanna mess my pc up!

My Computer

Spent another hour or so on the phone/remote assistance with Symantec Support today. A 4th person from their tech staff tried again couldn't get Norton 360 to work on my laptop. I've been given permission to return the CD (with a copy of my original receipt from last week) and receive a refund.

Since I've become really familiar lately with doing a System Restore when my installs go wrong, I thought I would risk purchasing AVG online and installing it. So far it seems to be working fine and not breaking anything else .

Hi rekt,

I don't have the sidebar anymore, so this is from memory - try typing sidebar into the start search menu, then right click it and run as admin. when it pops up.

If you right click on the sidebar itself, you get options such as whether to run at startup, etc.

Hope it helps
