Hi Lost896, welcome to the board,

Before getting into more complicated trouble shooting, first, I recommend to make sure your SATA cable is making good connection by wiggle and tug on it. Replace the cables with aftermarket ones when you have a chance. Loosen SATA cable is a know cause for problem of the this type.

Hope this would fix it. Post back.

Well, to be honest lost896..... I would do what vista tells you to, cos otherwise, one of these days, you will lose everything on that drive and it will have somply broken down. So my advice would be to get a new drive!

As for the actual thing you are looking for....I'm sorry, I haven't been able to find it either.

What you could be getting could be a SMART error. In which the hdd tells you that it is working out of specified limits & you should back up all your data. What I would recommend you that run a diagnostic test on the hdd.

How can you be so sure that there's nothing wrong with it? The errors do not pop up for nothing. Have you tried third party diagnostic software? Have you tried checkdisk and some other software?
Have you tried the same disk in another computer? If there is nothing wrong with the disk itself, putting it in another computer would mean that it would not generate that same message in another vista machine. If it DOES create that message, then there is something wrong with that disk, whether you can still use it or not. Just means that it's a ticking time bomb, waiting to go off....

I'd try to look for some third party diagnostic tools, if I were you, and try to see if they can tell you if anything is wrong with the disk, and if so, what.

what i've read on the web after a google search on reallocated sectors is that this error cannot be fixed. If I were you, I would check the warranty on that drive. Many drives have several years of warranty, so it might be possible to get it replaced for free.

I would do regular backups of your data. Before you crack the chassis, backup your stuff to an external drive.
