Solved The whole appearance of System Restore has changed

System Restore: I used to have a box that opened with a suggested restore point, and then below an option to choose a different restore point. When I clicked on that a page opened with my restore points, and also a box to show restore points older than 5 days.

Now the box that opens for system restore no longer shows a suggested restore point with that option to choose a different restore point. The only option on the page is to click Next. When I do that it takes me to a page with restore points but the option to show restore points older than 5 days is also gone.

Shadow copy information for C shows 6.936 GB used -- Allocated 8.079 GB -- Maximum 30 GB. I have 288 GB of free disk space on drive C.

For D it shows 216.109 MB used -- 499.266 MB allocated -- Maximum 1.5 GB. Drive D has 9.99 GB of free space.

I have checked to show hidden files and folders as some said that would solve it, but it didn't for me.

I'm a dummy. Does anyone know why the appearance of my system restore has changed like this. Please HELP!

Thank you.

Hello Nikilit,

Restore Points in Vista are only availble for up to 90 days, or until the max allocated space runs out and the oldest restore point is replaced by a newer one. Plus, if you used Disk Cleanup to delete all but the latest restore points.

Do you believe that they may be older than 90 days?

To Brink: No, I am sure they weren't. I generate a lot of system restore points on my own.

To Gary: I ran that sfc scannow and there were a couple of items in question. Can you tell me what these mean, what I can do -- and if not, do you know where I might be able to find out?

I clicked another link which explained that the way these errors reads means scf can not repair the files.

I already ran check disk last night. It sounds like I can't do a repair installation because this is OEM software and I don't have the right kind of disk for that, so is there another way or do I have to completely reinstall?

Most OEM have a recovery partition so that the computer can be set back to factory specs. It will mean backing up all your personal info., resetting and then reinstalling all your programs. You can find info on how to do that in the owners manual or at their web site. This is the only thing I know to fix it. Maybe someone else has a better idea?

In addition,

Since this is a OEM Vista, you're restore points may not be on Vista. Instead, they may have been created by your OEM recovery manager program and stored on the D: recovery partition instead. You can check this by booting into the Advanced Boot Options screen and selecting the Repair Your Computer option, then System Restore to see if your restore points are listed there (recovery partition) instead.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Gary: Thanks for trying to help. Actually, last evening I started backing up things and locating all my program keys, etc., in preparation for doing a complete system reinstall.

Shawn: I started in safe mode last night and there was an option to Repair Start Up and I did that. No problems were found.

Also, in Googling these two files that scf found and couldn't repair, it sounded as though they really aren't very crucial, and since they seem to refer to my printer I don't know how they could affect System Restore.

On Nov. 28 I shut down System Restore and started over. I now have 8 restore points. It looks like there is room in the window for about two more and then I'll be curious if the "Show restore points older than 5 days" will come back, but somehow I don't it will. I also still don't get the box that shows a suggested restore point and then the option you can check to "choose another restore point."

Anyway, thanks for your time and trying to offer advice. Guess I'll just plug along until I decide to go ahead with a reinstall. Lord, I hate to think about that!

It could possibly have changes in SP1 - and you might be remembering pre-SP1 SR?

I used the command box to make certain I had adequate storage space for System Restore. After working my way through that by trial and error (quite a feat for me) I shut System Restore off and started over. It has been enough days now so that I have accumulated new restore points and my System Restore is back to working. I opened it today and the features that were missing are once again in evidence.
