Windows slows down every 30-60s

Hello,

Just finished my new build, and the computer has had a 'bottleneck' or 'hiccup' every -10 seconds since i booted it, the windows splash screen has a 'hiccup' at the windows light logo. Everything(word processing, web surfing, gaming, watching a video) is affected by this and I am wondering how to solve this problem. I have tried to update all of the drivers, I flashed the BIOS. I am going to try to troubleshoot this for another week or so and then try to reinstall windows. My windows experience index is 5.9 across the board. Thank you for the help.

Hi transaman, and welcome to the Vista Forums,

Sounds as if Vista is still performing housekeeping tasks ie. Indexing and setting prefetch this is normal with a new install, and can normally be seen by excessive disk activity. depending how much data is on your drives it may take a day or so to settle down. These tasks are prioritised to stop when there is user activity so if it's possible would try to leave the machine running when not in use and once it finishes it should be much better.

hope this helps

The computer has been on for ~120 hours. In the Resource Monitor, the disk activity doesn't appear to be moving. In addition, would Vista be indexing & prefetching before it boots up? As previously stated, even the windows logo has a 'hiccup' before windows lets you sign in. I had at first thought it might be my HD setup being fragmented since I have had the pair of raptors for a while. I defragged the C: (the RAID0) 4x. Thank you very much for your help, it is much appreciated.

Hi,

The hiccup before login could be related to the new prefetch (superfetch) but couldn't swear to it
when your at the desktop does processor activity peak to coincide with the hiccup?
if so then it may be something cycling in the background.
you may be able to see this in the task manager - set it to sort processes by cpu usage and see if you get a process jump to the top of the list to coincide with the hiccup

you may want to try Sysinternals Procmon to see if you can capture exactly what is happening ...

I haven't personally witnessed the CPU spike at all, looking at the resource monitor, and the sidebar CPU monitor, despite a visible slowdown happening. What should I look for in the Process Monitor? Thanks again.

Hi,

The problem is it could be anything but would at this stage look for any process that's peak usage patten follows the cycle you are getting

After reassessing the situation, I realize that the slowdown is closer to 5-10 seconds apart. It is a 1-2 second 'jerk' in the mouse/video/game/text typing. searchindexer and svchost are the two who have high usage, but they aren't that close to firefox or steam. it looks like firefox & steam are the two highest usage programs, but even when I close them the computer slows down.

I would say the problem is coming from some where else because FF and steam, or any sort of processing except may be Crysis, are not enough to slow down that powerful system. I would looking at the HDDs and the rams.

I would remove half of the rams to see if problem persists; swap the other half and observe. If all good, you may need to manipulate the voltage by increasing in small step of 0.1v.

On the HDDS, make sure air circulation is proper. Monitor their temperature.

Hope it is nothing serious. Good luck and post back.
