Vista Home Basic Won't Activate

I have a friend with Windows Vista Home Basic on his HP laptop, he has a valid key in the back of it on a sticker, it worked before, but after a reformat and reinstallation of Windows, it keeps bugging him that it's not genuine. We tried various command prompts found online to reset validation keys or stuff like that, we passed the phone activation successfully, but still there's no change.
Help please?
Also, I apologize if this is the wrong section; if it is, please move it to the correct one.
Thanks in advance =]

Oops, ok.

Since this is a OEM Vista version, try contacting the OEM for activating the Vista. You should have a number to call that is like the MS phone activation one. MS had stopped supporting OEM copies from what I hear.

yup Microsoft don't support OEM versions at all thats the responsiblity of the system builder but as it's an HP laptop it should not be shipped with OEM software,

try talking to someone at microsoft(don't know how easy that will be but worth a go) also call HP there customer support is quiet good and should help you resolve this if they can.

it may be that it has been activated too many times so microsoft think it is being used on multiple computers.

hope this helps a bit
