Vista & Ubuntu Dual Boot issue

Ok, so here's the deal.

A while ago I decided to try out Ubuntu on my RAID JBOD computer setup, but unfortunately Ubuntu 8.10 or 8.04 would not even start up, it would just sit in command prompt waiting for an input from me, but of course, I'm no expert in such things (something about "raminitfs" and it would just sit there waiting for me to type something, but even after typing "help" I am still lost). So after a good hour looking at other forums with no success, I decided to take Ubuntu off. But see, here's some tricky stuff:

When I installed both Ubuntu versions, instead of creating a partition, I chose to install it right in Windows as an APPLICATION, saying that it might decrease disk performance, but no biggie.

I uninstalled both versions as I would with a regular application: Default programs > Programs > Uninstall

The problem here is the following: every time I boot up, I come up to the Windows Vista boot manager screen, and gives me the following options:

Windows Vista
Ubuntu
Ubuntu

But the problem is, I already uninstalled both Ubuntu versions!

I already tried using the repair method on my Vista DVD, as well as the bootrec/fixboot and bootrec/fixmbr command methods, but they didn't do anything. The options are still appearing every time I boot. I figured an alternative would be to go into Advanced Settings through Computer>Properties and then check off the time to display multiple OSes option, but it still gripes me that the Ubuntu option is still there somewhere on my RAID hard drives and I cannot remove it.

I checked the Disk Manager under Administrative Options in the control panel, and I see no other partitions other than Vista.

This is still an issue to me because what if I want to install Windows XP or something and I have to use the Windows Vista Boot Manager?

I would appreciate it if there is anyone out there who knows how to solve this problem.

Thank You

~Soma

PS: For reference, I have windows vista business 64 bit

Hello Soma, and welcome to the Vista Forums

The easiest way to solve this is type msconfig.exe into the start search bar and press enter

This will load the config editor on the Boot tab you should be able to delete the remnant entries

If you wish to dual boot Vista and Ubuntu I would recommend EasyBCD. Their documentation on their site includes a step by step for doing the dual boot and retaining control in vista.

Hello Barman, thanks for your timely reply, I just tried your solutions, but what is odd is that now Vista is shown as the only operating system through msconfig, but in the system recovery menu, it still shows Ubuntu options, in which I know they will still show up during bootup, as shown below.

I find this very odd...any thoughts?

Hi you may need to check the "Make these settings permanent" box and reboot to get this to stick

If this still refuses to work you could try removing the entries using EasyBCD

Hi,

Yes EasyBCD is the first app to be installed on any of my Vista+ systems after AV and Firewall.

Am on a Quad boot here and don't now how I'd manage things without it :)

Are you sure you had the Desktop edition and not the Server?

I'm on Quad boot, and I only used the Vista programs to set it up, I don't see the point of 3rd party programs when the applications are already on your system,

I think 3rd party should only be used when there is no other way.

Slightly off topic, but seeing as you mentioned it, I'd suggest you get rid of your RAID JBOD setup. You're asking for trouble - unless you have a watertight backup policy.

If something happens to your RAID controller, the chances of successfully re-creating the JBOD setup without data loss is 0 with a different controller.
