In what way is the mouse cursor "acting funny"? Is the mouse not working? Is it not longer the arrow that it should be? "Acting funny" doesn't really say WHAT the problem is...

I would suggest you try and find the latest drivers for your mouse and or make sure the mouse is functioning correctly in the first place, as disabling the Shell Hardware Detection service really isn’t a "fix".

The purpose of the Shell Hardware Detection service is to provide notifications for AutoPlay hardware events. Example: Used for the auto play of devices like memory cards, CD drives, etc.

I would also suggest you read some thoughts about this issue here: http://www.vistax64.com/general-discussion/184479-windows-blinking-edges-i-found.html

However if you still feel the need to disable this service, follow the instructions below:

To disable the Shell Hardware Detection service, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Administrative Tools.
3. Double-click Services.
4. Double-click Shell Hardware Detection service.
5. In the Startup type list, click Disabled.
6. Click Stop, and then click OK.

Good luck.

Really appreciate your reply.
Mouse cursor work and functioning properly in all programs except the window explorer.
In window explorer, the mouse cursor act like an arrow and change to the hour glass repeatly, non stop until you escape from the window explorer.
Gateway technical support suggest I roll back the mouse driver, seems don't work, same as before.
Another member of this forum just give some suggestions, I need to try it out.
Thanks..........everybody

I have the identical problem and also have a Gateway FX6800
Gateway has been of little help
I disabled the shell hardware detection based on comment on another site.
It worked however it does cause problems in CD/DVD detection.
When I tried to burn a CD, Nero 9 would not recognize I put in a blank CD.
Could not get around issue. turned shell hardware detection back on and it worked.

Found solution for this, it's the HDMI Driver.
In Device manager, go to sounds, video and game controllers.
Disable the ATI HDMI Audio.

Opps I should have quoted the Original Poster as it most applies to what he posted.
PS. I have the Gateway FX6800-01e Stock System
