I have imported avi videos from my minidvc, and edited them with moviemaker and saved them as 1080p wmv files.
Windows Movie Maker can import video, audio, or image files in a wide variety of formats, including the following: MP2, MP2V, MPE, MPV2, MPEG, MPG, WM, WMV, AVI, BMP, JPEG, MP3, and WAV.

Thanks Guys; I already have the K-Lite mega codec pack for x64, but I don't think it's a very good one and only works when "it " wants to. I'll try the one recommended for me in the last thread. And THANX in advance....

........PS........I un-installed the BOGUS K-Lite first, removed the registry keys generated by said product, restarted my machine, installed Shark v505, restarted, and then installed Shark x64 v158, and restarted once again...Opened WMM and imported an .avi and an MP4......Both worked marvelously..... Best $217.00 I've ever spent !!!(Vista Ultimate x32 & x64)

I'm glad it all worked out for you, TechSgt.

Sharks codec pack for Vista (either x86 or x64 versions) is to put it mildly, quite simply the absolute best codec pack for Vista I have ever encountered!

I have to admit, that dispite all negative reviews of Vista in general, I totally agree with you "D".......In my 34 years, I have seen the "Tech" revolution evolve from cellular phones which needed their own mode of transportation to carry them, and computers which needed an entire office complex to house them. Todays technology allows us to have web browsers on cell phones which are no bigger than the palm of your hand, and web browsers on our video game consoles, such as the Sony PSP's. So, to all NAY-SAYERS concerning Vista, (atleast, my version of Vista) .....BAH, to ya !!!

Think back to the 60's to a TV show about a brave band of explorers with communicators slightly smaller than the palm of their hands. Back then that was considered bleeding edge sci-fi, and now today, most modern cell phones resemble those communicators. I dare anyone to tell me I'm wrong when I say that Star Trek as inspired a great deal of the technology we take for granted today...

But we digress.

I'm glad your problem with Movie Maker is sorted. I'll be tagging this thread as solved...

Got a new problem; I CAN import .avi files into WMM, however, I was wrong about the MP4 movies........" C:\Users\Thom-N-Diane\Videos\American History X.mp4 could not be imported." Any solutions (ideas) for this new problem?:( Need it fast for a game hacker, who was caught and I need to make a movie for Punkbuster. Thanks Dzomlija, in advance for your help, which I know you always give !!! :)

I can’t get it to work either & will try the Codec Pack mentioned by bruce2.
Why do you want to convert them to WMV? Download VLC media player, it plays most everything even uTube FLV & does a good job with excellent sound & video, better than Windows Media Player..

It is not playing it that is causing the problem, it is importing it into the Windows Movie maker that is the problem - hence the suggestion to convert the video first....

If you have the Vista Codec package installed, then there is a set of items located in the VCP menu in the Start panel - Start --> All Program --> VistaCodecs --> Tools (mine says 32bit and 64 bit tools as two separate folders, but you'll only see that on 64bit OSs that have both the 32bit and 64bit packages). In that folder you'll see a lot of things - scroll down to MP4 and there should be a shortcut to *fix* MP4 playback - see if that helps.
