Pictures gets "pixelated" when I zoom in.

Well, when I zoom in the Windows Photo Gallery pictures gets pixelated instead of "smoothed" out like in XPs Photo and Fax Viewer. Kind of annoying.

    Anyone know howto fix it?

Added a picture to show what I mean by pixelated.

Hi Stigern and welcome to Vista Forums

This is perfectly normal. Take a look at the following images. The second image is a magnified section of the first. No further editing other than zooming has taken place.

Notice how the head and upper body area of the animal is pixelated. Magnification actually involves a principle known as the Inverse Square Law - see: Inverse-square law - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Using the diagram as an example, with S representing the pixel and r, 2r, and 3r representing the level of magnification, it can be seen that r equates to normal size (1:1). 2r is a doubling in size (2:1) and it can be seen that each pixel is now represented by 4 (don't forget that the doubling occurs both horizontally as well as vertically). Likewise, 3r is a trebling of the original size (3:1), and the original pixel is now represented by 9 pixels.

Well, I do know that. I can show you an example taken in XPs Fax & Picture viewer (or whatever it's called :P):

See how it "smooths" the transition to the next pixel? I want that in Vista!

So, no one knows if this is possible?

Kind of hate the pixelating effect when zooming in.

No matter what image program you use this is going to happen...
Some may look different than others depending on how sophisticated they are on using resources.
I'm afraid there's no way around this one.

Re: Pictures gets "pixelated" when I zoom in.

This seems to be an old thread that was never answered and I have the same question. When I zoom in on a photo in XP, instead of the photo getting more and more pixelated, it just gets blurry. There is some kind of smooth transition effect that is used in XP. So even though the images gets more and more blurry as you zoom in, it doesn't look nearly as bad as when zoomed in using Vista Ultimate where the images gets more and more blocky/pixelated. I was hoping someone might know of some kind of tweak in the OS for using the Window Picture view and getting it to blurr instead of pixelate images as they are zoomed in.

For what it's worth, it might have something to do with the quality of the original photo.
I notice that when I zoom in on some of my older photos taken with my 35mm camera and saved onto CD (small file size, lower quality) this pixelated thing happens..
It is less apparent when I zoom in on my 2MB file size pictures saved directly from my 8MP camera, but if you do go in close enough, it still happens..

Re: Pictures gets "pixelated" when I zoom in.

I have seen a couple of posts that are the same, and no one seems to be able to answer the question. Everyone knows images get pixelated or blurry when zoomed in too much. Everyone also knows that you can zoom in more on higher quality images. The question I, and others are trying to get answered, is this: For the same exact image file...if zoomed in with Windows Photo viewer in Windows XP, the image just gets blurry the more you zoom in. However, if you look at the same exact image file in Windows Vista Ultimate...as you zoom in, instead of it getting blurry, it gets pixelated and blocky. Why?? Is there any way to get the windows picture viewer in Vista to act the same way as it does in XP?? I don't want to have to download a third party software program. I have plenty of pieces of software for editing images etc. But I use Windows picture viewer for quickly looking through photos.

If you use MS Office 2007 I've got your answer, and it's right on your system and you probably never noticed it: Microsoft Office Picture Manager. GREAT photo viewing and editing app, and zooming in is very smooth -- with the pic just eventually getting blurry, not pixelated. And if you're using an older version of Office, you've got Microsoft Photo Editor, which is Picture Manager's predecessor. Haven't checked this in Photo Editor, but seeing as they're very similar, it's probably true for Photo Editor as well.
