Vista DVD Maker

Hi All. I hope someone can Help?
Firstly i downloaded from my canon digital camcorder a few video clips from my weekend away. The clips are in Mpeg 11 format. I also had some pictures as well, which are in Jpeg format.
I opened up Movie Maker and started adding to the storyboard both video clips and pictures. I joined the pics and clips with transitions. On completion i clicked on publish to DVD, and then DVD Maker started up and commenced encoding. Now this is were the trouble starts. The encoding gets to 64% and then hangs there and doesnot continue on, after about 40minutes I get another box reading "unspecified error".
To try and fix the problem i have removed each file, one at a time from my project, to try and determine if there is a bad file. After 5-6 hours of removing 1 file at a time ,saving project, and then again selecting publish to DvD and watching DVD Maker get to about 64% and stop. This didnt fix the problem. Step 2:
I then removed all transitions, This didnot work . Same problem appears. But now A Box comes up and I get "Catastrophic error"

Hello blaxland twin and Welcome to Vista Forums!
We are here to help you!

Your problem seems like one i had a few weeks ago. I tried all different things but nothing seemed to work. I unfortunitally dont have a DVD burner (which sucks but ill live).
Anyways, do you have any other types of files?
.mp4
.avi
.wmv
Let me know because i would like you to try and burn just one little clip in one of the following formats. Try any other type you have and let me know. This will help me determine if it is Windoes DVD burner or the type of file you are working with.

Let me know so i can further assist you.
Ben

If you put all of your files into MM and publish them to DVD, you will create a single large movie. When doing that, I have the same problem as you.

I solved the problem by using the following procedure:

o I add the movies one at a time to the Movie Maker, add a title page and transition, and publish to WMV on my hard disk.

o After I dress up each of the files in this manner, I launch DM manually and add each of the dressed up WMV files manually.

Now instead of publishing one large movie, you are publishing several smaller movies which will each appear as a single title listed in the scenes menus.

I have built several full length DVD movies in this manner without any problems.

Ben, i have tried converting the mpeg2 to other formats like avi and wmv, but the converted file just doesnt match the quality of the original mpeg2. Is it the converter i use or is it just normal.

What type of converter are you using. Sometimes it the converter and others it just what they movie clip is like.

I am not sure about the converter you are using, but if you open your MPEG2 file in MM and then "Publish Movie" to "This Computer" you will have several formats to choose from. Try picking "Windows Media HD 1080p" and you should get reasonably similar results to the original.

Even if it is not quite as good, you will not be able to tell the difference when playing it as a DVD. I have been converting mine to "Windows Media DVD Quality" and the DVD looks great.

Thanks All.
Sorry for taking so long to reply, Today i seem to have resolved my problem. FINALLY
wtblock, i tried publishing my project to the PC in 1080p hd, but i got an error message reading: Windows Movie Maker cannot save the movie to the specified location. Verify that the original source files used in your movie are still available.
I then broke the project up in two and published it to the pc as DV-AVI, both converted ok, then opened DVD Maker and added both clips to make one file to make a DVD for viewing on TV. WORKED OK.
But i was still disappointed why it would not work as one project with the MPEG-2 files. I started looking further, and the following site provided the answer www.papajohn.org/MM2-Issues-CantSaveMovie.html
I added an additional 1GIG of memory in my laptop, bringing the total to 3gig.
Now the orginal project with MPEG-2 and JPG files encodes fine in DVD Maker without a hitch.
I hope this helps others.
Many thanks
