Hi aleks, and welcome to the Vista Forums,

When you say you have problems can you be a little more specific.

Have you tried running SQL server in Compatibility mode for XP ?

If you need to partition your drive you may be able to do this from within vista - using the in-built Disk Maintenance tool. If not you could try something like Gparted Live CD which runs outside of the OS ( may cause problems so ensure you have recovery desk available to fix start-up of Vista). Also Paragon have a Vista compatible free "Express" disk manager which may be of use

Create a Recovery Disc - Vista Forums

Also as you are looking to install XP after Vista you may need to use EasyBCD which will allow you to boot XP from the Vista bootloader

Are you talking SQL Server 2005 Express or the full SQL 2005?

If you want to install XP, You need to install it as your C: drive before Vista.

Aleks,

Before you add XP just to run one application try this ....

When you run your Application - Right click and choose "run as Administrator" see if this will allow you to create databases. If this works you can navigate to the .EXE file for your application right click and on the Compatibility Tab Check the "Run as administrator" box, as the program itself is a few years old I would also check the Compatibility mode for XP SP2.

you may have to do this for the SQL express as well as the main program.

I manage two SQL 2005 servers (64-bit and 32-it with 32 databased) and use SQL 2005 express at home for various apps.

Log in with the administrator account. Disable your anti-virus. Add/remove the old instances of SQL. Delete the directories. Reboot. Login again as administrator. Reinstall your SQL from scratch. You can't use run as administrator. Some .net based databases will not run at all in SQL. You need to install XP or XP x64. I would verify if it can even be installed in Vista. Backup Exec for Windows Server is my backup. It used SQL 2005 EE and can't be installed in Vista because SQL 2005 and .Net does not work in Vista. I had to move my tape drives at home to another workstation with XP x64 installed.

If you need to dual boot XP and Vista, you will have to backup your stuff. Remove Vista. Install XP first and then install Vista in a second partition.
