Laptop restarts randomly & when I open the lid

I have tried everything possible that is posted here - my issues are:

1) Randomly the laptop restarts by itself

2) When I close the lid, it goes to sleep (as set up under power settings) but when I "wake it up" - it restarts and I get the error that windows did not shut down properly.

Please...does anyone have a solution??

Thanks
Julie

First thing first.

Sleep disorder: Make sure nothing can wake you up that is not authorized. Authorize with a password. Go back to power plan and program your waking up to a password.

What you might want to do is go to your laptop manufacturer's website and download a firmware (BIOS) update that addresses this issue. My own rig (Prometheus) had this issue with the Asus M3A32-MVP DELUXE motherboard. I couldn't successfully resume from sleep mode, and a BIOS update fixed the problem.

Just be sure to get the correct BIOS update for your specific brand and model of laptop, as using the wrong BIOS could turn it into a brick.

Well I had the question posted on another thread...and Brink told me to do this

Does your laptop not wake up when you open the lid without having to press the power button? If not, can you press any other key to wake it instead?

I do not have a laptop, but I would assume that pressing the power button would cause the computer to shutdown or restart normally. You might check the Power Plan Options to see what each "Power buttons and lid" is set for to see if you can change the action of the power button to not restart the computer.

And that finally worked...I shut the lid, it goes to sleep, I open it and instead of restarting it wakes up.

When it falls asleep with the lid open I can now press the power button and it wakes up - normally it would have restarted.

Thanks for all your help guys!

There is a diff between taking a nap (sleep) and going into coma (hibernate). Sleep uses batt power and Hib is as good as off, no batt usage. Both wake up to pre-dormant screen. No need for re-boot. Napping wakes up to any key and Coma wakes up to only power button. Screen saver with blank screen can mimic both.

Julie, I think your power planning needs some re-visits and more defined programming. And I recommend all awakenings (including blank screen saver)are password protected.

I have visted all the power options and actually removed the option to hibernate. It is all working perfect now and does not restart when the power button is pushed or if the lid shuts.

So you decided to deprive yourself of a luxury: Hibernation.

Consider this: By default, Restore points are always made by built in System user each time you reboot. And Restore points hog space. Less space=slower pc. True, Sleep needs no reboot but it uses batt power. Only Hib uses no batt power and not need reboot. So when you are cordless, and need to be in and out, Hib is your best option.
