Memory usage goes way down after putting Vista to sleep...

Greets all. :D

So, I was in for a bit of a shock to see my PF usage go from 120MB (XP Pro) to 786 MB with Vista Ult 64. Ok - it's all good. It actually is just over 900 right after boot, but settles to about 786 after about a minute of sitting idle.

The thing I noticed it that after putting the computer to sleep, and then waking it, my PF usage is at 534 MB - HUGE difference. I left it idle for about 20 min. to see if it would creep back up, but it didn't.

Two things I noticed:

svchost went from about 59k > 47k
explorer went from about 14k > 5k

So, that's part of it.

But the big question here is how to get Vista to boot that way? - so it's usage is at 534 MB as opposed to 786 MB. I understand there arre services I can disable (print spooler for one, as I do not have a printer hooked to this computer), but the point here is the usage dropped that drastically without disabling anything in services.msc. Any way to get Vista to boot, so the mem usgae is the same as after it is put to sleep?

Thanks much in advance.

Hello RiffWraithm and welcome to Vista Forums.

This is pretty much controlled by what you have loading at startup and Superfetch in Vista. It loads what it thinks you will need into memory to help Vista run it faster. It learns in time what you may need in memory, so it will fluctuate a bit until it learns your pattern completely. I would recommend that you let Superfetch stay set at the default settings since it does a pretty good job in Vista. Remember, unused RAM is wasted RAM.

If you would like to play around with the Superfetch settings a bit to see if anything may make a difference for you, then these tutorials can help with this.
