Flashing BIOS

Hello,

I just joined your forum and I am very impressed. I tried doing some research on this and think I have a fairly good grasp, but I'm still unsure about flashing my BIOS. My MoBo is Abit AB9 Quad GT. I have downloade the latest version, and it came with the AWDFLSH utility. My confusion lies in whether or not I should create a partition and copy the files to it, and boot from there (if that is even possible), or if I can just run the utility program from my desktop. Thanks in advance for any info..as you can tell, I'm a noob when it comes to BIOS's!

Hi md88pilot and welcome to Vista Forums

Unless you are having problems with your system and this can be corrected by updating the code in your BIOS, then I would leave this well alone. If done incorrectly, this can leave you with a dead motherboard with little (or no) hope of reviving. Should you decide to upgrade your BIOS, go to the motherboard manufacturers' website and download the latest version for your board. You might also like to download and print out any instructions provided. When you carry out the upgrade, follow these instructions TO THE LETTER. Note that we are not responsible should you decide to go ahead and things go awry.

Like Dwarf and Patio said, you should only flash your BIOS if your absolutely must. Generally what this means is that if you are 110% certain that you have exhausted all possible alternatives to resolving a particular problem, and that updating your BIOS is the last choice, then you should do so, otherwise leave your BIOS alone.

If something goes wrng during the Flashing process, you could turn your PC into a very expensive paperwight.

Including my vote, you are 3 against flashing, and 0 for.

Got, I have decided against flashing the BIOS. I have another issue and that is RAM temperature. I posted someting about it in overclocking and cooling section, but I've had 5 RAM sticks go bad in the last few months. Ballistix Tracers run at 2.2v. Crucial, who has been great through all this, says my RAM probably running too hot. My case probe has it at 60c idle, up to 70c or so when loaded up with my games....Any thoughts on that?
