Do you only have one physical com port, or should you have 2 and one has disappeared?

If you right-click Computer and select Manage, then click on Device Manager on the left, scroll to Ports on the right and expand, what do you see? How many are listed as COM ports?

If you are trying to change COM2 into COM1, you might have an issue but you could try going to the properties of COM2 and in an Advanced section (usually Properties > Porrt Settings > Advanced), change it to COM1. Your system should tell you whether COM1 is already in use or not.

Changing from COM2 to COM1 will force the system to re-assign IRQs and memory address allocations, so you might find that because of another device that is using the same IRQ that COM1 would normally use, your system has changed it to COM2 (COM1 and COM3 share a common IRQ, as do COM2 and COM4 ... at least they did in the old days).

Some third party software can check these things
I'm downloading some now so will check it out and if it looks OK, will post back with a link

Hmm, try setting it to COM1 anyway, see if it will let you (you might get a warning)
If it lets you, reboot and see what it comes back with

Although I can see many COMs listed on my PC (ie. I have many different ones to choose from if I wanted to change my COM1 to COM6), the software I tried only recognises COM1 (I have one physical port) and wouldn't display what what using the others

Anything stopping you from using COM2 instead? Might be an easier solution than trying to figure what's using COM1

What are you trying to hang off the com port? A printer? Modem? Something else?

I've sometimes had software that "captures" the com port, which from what you're saying might now be part of startup

If you boot into safe mode, is COM1 still in use?

Was there something in the setup software whereby you had to tell it what port it was on?

I don't know enough about those devices you listed, but I'd suggested removing all peripheral devices (leave the wireless keyboard, esp if it's been there a while) but start off simple

You want as much as possible just your computer with monitor and keyboard, see if COM1 returns after a reboot

Then add your devices one at a time and keep checking to see whether COM1 is still available

COM1 and 3 share resources so I'm not surprised that if COM1 is available, so is COM3 but it sounds like another piece of hardware is using the same resources as those COM ports

What about when booting into safe mode? Still the same situation?

Won't have anything to do with your screen

No problem, glad it's working
Did some reading last night and it seems quite common for "other devices" such as USB devices to take control of COM ports, assumeably because it steals the resources that the com would normally use

Wired keyboards are better anyway :)
