Brand new Vistax64 laptop explorer crashes...

I recently purchased a nice shiny new HP Pavilion DV7-1130US.

It came with vista ultimate x64 SP1. I wanted XP but that was not an option.

For the first few hours it was very buggy and explorer was hanging alot. After awhile it got better and for about 2 weeks i was really starting to enjoy my lovely new laptop. Well today, for from what I can see no reason whatsoever, my laptop has become unusable.

My symptoms are similar to those discussed in this thread:

    Windows Explorer Crashes

I boot up, log in, everything seems ok for the first 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Then explorer freezes and I cant access or use any applications, everything goes into "not responding" mode, and none of my clicks register. Then 2-5 minutes go by and all my clicks happen at once. It seems like explorer restarts once or twice during this too as I get the "ding" sounds.

I have also received some memory errors, and fatal application crashes from various applications. I cant even do anything, I tried to get to system restore in the first 30 seconds after boot up when the computer is usable, but i cant make it and am not sure where system restore is located.

I love my new laptop but I am so frustrated right now that I could smash it against the wall. I blame vista, as I am using an old ass XP desktop right now that works absolutely fine, never ever crashes, yet my shiny new fancy HP dual core 4 gigabytes of ram vista x64 bit laptop is ****ing worthless.

Sorry, but I am quite angry right now. Blowing everything away and reinstalling might be possible although i dont think i have a vista disk with my laptop. Thats another thing...it should be illegal to ship a laptop without the OS disk, i paid for a full version of vista ultimate, send me the ****ing disk in the box.

Ok, venting done. Now anyone have any advice? And no I dont think my laptop has drivers for all of my hardware in XP 64bit, i checked.

Strange, I had called HP a month ago because Quick Play stopped playing (I was tweaking the system too much...I think I changed something in Device manager). Rep helped me for an hour thru remote assistance and then towards the last step or so, she ran into a warning that said something like a driver could not be installed. So, she put me on hold for a few mins while talking with her supervisor. Then they both told me that I have to re-install Vista. In two days I received VISTA DVD.

Stranger still, Quick Play just started playing perfectly right after we hanged up. Obviously, she fixed my prob and not realize it. So now I have a DVD I do not even need..that is, until my next major catastrophic tweaking.

In short, can't you call HP for a DVD?

BTW, we both have sexy shinny smooth Pavilion dv7 series notebook. I too, am in love with it.

Before they send you a DVD, try recovery manager. See if you can get some missing programs or drivers from it. Or system recovery (last resort).

I also had similar window explorer not responding bit which was fixed by disabling some add-ons.

Ok...so I have gotten to know the event viewer now.

Here is a sample of one of the many errors I have received:

Windows cannot access the file C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft.windows.common-controls_6595b64144ccf1df_6.0.6001.18000_none_5cdbaa5a083979cc\comctl32.dll for one of the following reasons: there is a problem with the network connection, the disk that the file is stored on, or the storage drivers installed on this computer; or the disk is missing. Windows closed the program Google Chrome because of this error.

    Program: Google Chrome
    File: C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft.windows.common-controls_6595b64144ccf1df_6.0.6001.18000_none_5cdbaa5a083979cc\comctl32.dll

The error value is listed in the Additional Data section.
    User Action
    1. Open the file again. This situation might be a temporary problem that corrects itself when the program runs again.
    2. If the file still cannot be accessed and
    - It is on the network, your network administrator should verify that there is not a problem with the network and that the server can be contacted.
    - It is on a removable disk, for example, a floppy disk or CD-ROM, verify that the disk is fully inserted into the computer.
    3. Check and repair the file system by running CHKDSK. To run CHKDSK, click Start, click Run, type CMD, and then click OK. At the command prompt, type CHKDSK /F, and then press ENTER.
    4. If the problem persists, restore the file from a backup copy.
    5. Determine whether other files on the same disk can be opened. If not, the disk might be damaged. If it is a hard disk, contact your administrator or computer hardware vendor for further assistance.

    Additional Data
    Error value: C0000185
    Disk type: 3
And here is a link to my whole error log:

Thanks, do you remember which addons you disabled? Maybe that will help me.

Also doing a disk scan right now, we'll see how that goes.

I disabled HP Smart BHO class and Java plug in ssv helper. If necessary, disable more ...but one at a time and re-enable if it is not the culprit. But the two I mentioned were the culprits in my casse.

Open HP in Program list and run HP Health Check to have an idea about your health and what need/s to be corrected. I have it on schedule to run once a month and it ran today while I was away and PC on sleep mode. Has an ugdate on : Intel flash on BIOS which I did not install because I am really humming. There is not a single thing wrong with my Pavilion dv7-1770us. Besides, I am not comfy with flashing Bios.

Re: Brand new Vistax64 laptop explorer crashes...

Deathknightarmy, I am working with the Windows Outreach Team, but I am not tech support; however I will do my best to lend a hand. The First thing I would like you to do is try to run Windows Update for Vista, and then run Updater for your Browser.
Go to the Tools tab, scroll down to Updater, click on that and follow the instructions. Go through all that and restart and then see if that helps your problem. Let me know if it you need additional assistance.
