There are a lot of things that will suck up drive space. Virtual Memory (sounds like the 2GB deal), system backups and restore points, shadow copy and such.

How much memory does your system have, are you using 32 bit or 64bit, and what are your system restore/shadow copy settings?

Really though, a 30GB drive is rather small, especially for Vista Ultimate. I'd recommend getting a larger drive, and you don't need the largest and latest. A 250GB drive is in the $40-50 range now.

The "hidden" missing space has troubled me too , until I found that it was the System Restore saving restore points...big restore points. They are hidden , you can't find the files or anything not even by searching for big files.

Anyway, I bet this is your problem.
So, to solve it, whenever you see missing space,
go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Cleanup
and go to More Options tab and at System Restore and Shadow Copies select "Clean up". This will delete all the last restore points except for the latest one. (you still have one restore point to go back to).

After this, press Cancel to Disk Cleanup to close it. Check your space now...

I had that problem till someone here mentioned System restore & yes a 30 GB HD is small. Is that a partition?
I would definitely want at least 100 GB & I just bought a WD external 500 GB HD for $123, free shipping. It sets next to my old 130 GB Maxtor external HD & my older 30 GB WD HD that cost $380 way back when. I would never be caught without external HD’s again after losing some important Family pic that are now gone forever when me Tower HD crashed & couldn’t be retrieved from a computer shop. Now I have all my very important stuff on all 3 ex drives & on DVD.

I use a Docking station, (SATA only) just plug in drive, (2 x 250gig), will take 2.5 drives as well.

I am also in vista.
got the same issue. What I am thinking is like in window server 2003 its 'disk quota' to use in system restore.

is it possible?
thanks a lot guys, you're doing very effectively.

Hello all.

I did much the same as wysiwyg, I added a HOT SWAP rack in one of the 5.25 drive bays.

? Maybe the new Drive is bad? I know from years past working for ATT that a chip cooks in & if it’s ok after 90 days it’s usually good for a long time. Sounds like your HD just simply failed & it’s time to use your warrantee & get a new one?
You did Delete it from Device Manager & do a restart?
