Vista Business (32bit). Complete PC Backup to External (USB 2.0) DVD-Rw Drive (Lite-On DVDRW SHW-160P6S with latest driver installed) just "hangs" (ie. DVD-R disk number 1) After the 1st DVD is apparently full, won't Eject the DVD for another "blank" DVD. Manual Eject button doesn't work with "Complete PC Backup"; works OK with other programs. Tried this with non-formatted and formatted "blank" DVD-R disks - same "hang". Have to just "Stop Backup" program to get out of this.
PC's internal "D:" drive is DVD read/CD read/write drive.
Is DVD disk type (DVD-R) a factor ? Is there a fix for this other than replacing the
internal "D:" drive with one that writes DVDs or getting some other "complete PC backup" software ? Incidentally, the PC BIOS has been updated.

There are many reported problems with the built in Vista backup program. It works for most people but can be problematical, particularly with DVD's. A better and cleaner alternative if you can afford it is to use Acronis. The Backup in Vista seems to work better when saving the image to a hard drive or USB. However I have been let down on occasion by a restore from backup not working. That's why I switched to Acronis

re: Complete PC backup "hangs"

Good news: Your DVD burner is fine.

Bad News: Vista's Backup does not appear to be DVD-R friendly. Some people have had more success with DVD+R discs.

+1 For Acronis.

re: Complete PC backup "hangs"

Success ! Complete PC Backup worked ok with DVD+R disks.
Guess I will have to check into the difference(s) between
DVD-R and DVD+R disks; why only one works ok.

My thanks to all for taking a moment to help out .........

re: Complete PC backup "hangs"

DVD+R allows multiple layers for one disc where as dvd-r only allows one layer. Multi layer DVD+R can allow extra capacity per disc than DVD-R hence its high cost, but I don't know how the +R works while the other wouldn't.:p

Hi,

Have had exactly the same problem trying to back up on DVD-R discs. However, I was able to manually eject the first disc. This appears to have recorded OK with Back up set, back up files and catalogs.

Is there any way that I can now:

1. check that this works?

2. continue recording the remaining files to be backed up

or

3. do I just need to start again?

Thanks for your assistance.

Mike
