Windows vista 64 bit freezes at desktop

I really need some help with this, I have read many posts in here and none had solved my problem.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A305-S6843 and since last thursday my computer freezes when it enters the desktop.
Anything I don wont work, the mouse moves, but I cant do anything, and the HD appears to be working nonstop. The cursor only shows the blue circle indicating activity.
In safe mode (with or without networking), it works fine, I have ran many antiviruses in safe mode, but when I restart the computer it freezes again.
It never happened before, and I never updated for SP1, it came that way when I bought it. It has never presented this issue before, and I dont recall installing anything software or hardware. It just suddenly happened.

Any help will be deeply, deeply appretiated.

My system:
Windows Vista Home Premium 64bits SP1
Toshiba Satellite A305-s6843
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T8100 @ 2.10ghz
4gb ram
2 X 200gb HDD
ATI Mobility Radeon HD3470.

Thanks in advance. Im desperate.

I did what you told me, and the Windows defender detects no problem as well as the chkdsk, the only one that detects corrupt files, but cant fix them is the system file checker.

Any ideas?.

If it can't fix them then you'll probably have to do a startup repair with your installation disk. Or if worse comes to worse, you may have to reinstall the OS. :( And if it comes to that then you should install SP1 and update your drivers and have a AV monitoring so if it was any viruses that caused it in the first place it won't happen again. I'm not saying that's what it was, it might be a driver issue since it seems fine in safe mode. You can go into safe mode and look in the device manger to see if you see any problems.

I did the startup repair, but it cant repair the problem.

The SP1 was installed when I bought the computer, and I always make the updates on time, dont have any idea of what happened.

I always have the AVG antivirus active, maybe I have to switch antivirus software, any ideas?

Unfortunatelly, the device manager do not show any conflict with any device. Everything appears to be normal in there.

Thanks Airbot and rajinisback for taking the time to help me. Im preparing for the worst, and started to back up all my info in case I have to format the HD and isntall everything again.

I thought that you had said you didn't have SP1 installed but I guess I read that wrong. You could try a different AV. Avast is good to try. You'd have to uninstall AVG. Sounds like a driver issue though. Try to update your drivers. If you absolutely have to reinstall then if it happens again after that, I might take it back if it's under warranty. Just some suggestions, others here may have more suggestions.

Thanks man, for the advice.

I guess the only option would be formatting and reinstaling OS. I will try avast as an AV.
I cant find any driver issue, there should be one, as you said. I just cant find it.

Im not 100% sure but very highly sure that it isnt a hardware proble, this computer has behaved excellent till now. But you know what they say....s*** happens.

Thanks

Hi Jcvalle,

Before you take the plunge and re-install you could try this ...

In safe mode run "msconfig.exe" and on the start-up tab disable all non Microsoft entries.

reboot and the PC will enter diagnostic start-up mode if the system starts then you know that one of the disabled items is the one causing the problem. you can then go back and enable items one at a time until you find the problem item.

This may take a while but will probably be quicker than a complete re-install :D

You can also try a system restore. I've looked up the process and found Windows Vista System Restore Guide outlining the step by step process. I've had many problems with AVG as it locked up my XP system by removing a file necessary to boot up my PC. I've found Avira AntiVir to be reliable and well maintained, though a full system scan can take some time and be relatively resource hungry during the actual scan. Otherwise it has a low system footprint. I would also recommend downloading Advanced Systemcare as this program is a good catchall for spyware and other malware as well as containing a registry fixer and a good basic defrag that can be run without much trouble or time and is more than worth what little time it will take. The best way to get rid of a problem is prevention after all.
