Optical drive problems

Hi all. I've scoured the 'net vainly for an answer to this, so I've decided to just ask it.

This seems to be common—the optical drive doesn't work. I'd like to detail more symptoms, though, that might help form a real fix for those whom the solution at The CD drive or the DVD drive does not work as expected on a computer that you upgraded to Windows Vista wouldn't work, as it didn't for me (Upperfilter and Lowerfilter values don't exist in my registry).

  • Upon a clean installation of Vista, the optical drive works fine. After installing the whole slew of current updates, it stops working. I didn't figure this was a thread for the Windows Updates forum, though.
  • When putting in a disc, the drive goes to work (illuminated busy light and the sound of the drive spinning) for a bit, then turns off and on continuously, freezing the computer until the disc is ejected.
  • A disc left in the drive upon start-up will work correctly. Once I open the drive, however, that's when it no longer works, whether I load the same or different disc.
So my question is, is there a way to fix this? Other solutions, like uninstalling the drive in the device manager and rebooting, haven't worked for me.

Thanks for the help! I hope this extra information is helpful, too.

what drive are we questioning on??
can you isolate which update does this?? (running updates in manual mode then install them 1 (3 if you are running non sp1) at a time....)
have you search for firmware updates??

My Computer

Thanks for your reply. I'm using a Sony DW-D26A. Firmware's up-to-date.

I'm not sure how I can install the updates one-by-one.
My plan was to do as you said, but I can't uninstall the updates--the update-uninstallation page only shows three updates with no option for "Uninstall" or "Change" as described--and reverting to the previous restore point does not undo the updates. Is there another way to get rid of the updates other than reinstalling Vista?

no as there are some that change intricate parts of vista...
such as REE (remote execution exploits, the ones that tell you to restart your computer...)
we may not be able to solve if you do not reinstall windows since this fresh install is your control (meaning it works at the moment)

so you have a fresh install with SP1??

Yep, I do. Vista does take a while to install, though :p so I'll get back to you on that in a while. If anything, at least I can tell the world which update is the one causing the problem.

Are the disks you are using compatible with the Drive. Sometimes a drive won't recognise certain brands. Just a thought.

Not really DA, he could be on a different brand than before. However, I don't really think that is the problem. And you seem have it all under control.
