Having problems with gateway laptop that has vista home premium 32 bit OS.
few days ago went to turn on the computer, power came on and microsoft corp activity box came up to show it was thinking but nothing else happened. Eventually managed to turn off the computer (couldn't shut down just powered off). Now when we turn on the computer the Gateway Bios screen shows then it goes to windows Error recovery screen.

Gives two options
- try to fix automatically (recommended) - have tried this but cant repair so have to shut down or can view diagnostic or options for recovery
- restart windows normally - nothing happens blank screen and have to turn computer off.

no hardware has been added recently
have downloaded trial versions of adobe software. Computer has minimum specs for operating this.

please help or advise.

Thanks

Have thought of doing this however laptop came with vista basic and we upgraded to vista home premium. Also everything i have read about doing this means losing data. (could be wrong and if data won't be lost then i think i would be willing to go back to vista basic in order to have an operating system again)
(just read your link. Very helpful but not ready for this drastic measure yet until we could hopefully save our data. Also the original setup was crap. Who in their right mind sells a system where the insalled software is incompatible with the operating system and the unfortunate purchaser is on the helpline constanlty from the start to try and get their new laptop operational? I guss thats a rant for another time)

I think there is a recovery partition but not sure if it has anything in there now. Is that the area that you can back up to? if it is then it became full some time ago and we backed up to an external hard drive (again could probably use this but don't want to lose new data and haven't backed up completely for a very long time)

I guess our main priority is not to loose data (if at all possible)
and be able to boot into system.
Then sort out underlying issues that caused problem in the first place.

No problem Angie.

Yes, doing a factory restore would format your hard drive and you would lose anything currently on it.

You might see if you can do a System Restore using a restore point dated before this problem to see if it can fix it.

tried restore points. all of them!!

I think we have to go to a pro IT Doctor! Hopefully they can then at least try and save data from hard drive somehow before sorting system.

thanks anyway

Will it allow you to boot into Safe Mode so that you can copy your data to DVD or USB flash drive?

no won't go into safe mode. I think this option only came up once when my husband was trying to fix things but i've never seen a safe mode option anywhere!
Anyway husband is frustrated and has called an IT guy to take it away and sort. Hard drive will be removed and data saved elswhere and laptop hopefully fixed.

thanks for your advice anyway and hope someone else finds this helpful.

Could this be a sign of a defective hard-drive or corruption?

I'm guessing that's what it is. If it is, you're recovery media won't work. This had happened to me.

What file does it stop loading windows at in Safe Mode? To get to safe mode you might need to do a few boots.

It originally came with 2X1GB DDR2 RAM and I swapped out one of the 1GB DDR2 RAM cards for a 2GB DDR2 RAM card.
Hi,

I have the same problem.

I turn the power on and I get taken to the Safe mode boot screen.

Firstly it say to install a windows instalation disk and follw on screen intructions.

then says boot in safe mode, safe mode with compt promt, sm with networking, last know good configuration, windows normally.......

I have no Windows Instalation Disk, All the options take me to the Windows Corporation with the green bar going across and doesnt do anyhting, stays on that.

I cannot seem to fix this please help.

My Computer

Hey, a buddy of mine is having similar issues. Right now I am not quite sure if its the Mother board or the hard drive. However, I would suggest getting an external SATA plug which would allow you to transfer your info onto another computer (granted its not already lost). It allows you to take out the hard drive and plug it into another computer as an external drive. I used one to back up the info on this HD so now i dont need to worry about loosing all the info after a re-format or backup.

Also, I am leaning towards believing these issues are related to gateways terrible Mobo. Seems that the boot sectors are becoming completely corrupted, and that some system drivers go missing. I had a problem very similar to this a while back on a dell. I must have fixed it 20+ times only to have it happen again. Not worth the trouble at all. I have an Acer right now and have never had any issues with the computer performing poorly. My advice is to start looking for a new computer and really really scrutinize company reviews. Check customer reviews at neweggs site (google it). Them have cheap prices but I dont like buying such sensitive hardware only to have it shipped and tossed around. So i use the site as a "customer review" database. It can really make a difference.

Anyway.. Best of luck to you. Hope i could help a bit.
