Contrary to popular belief, installing alot of codecs won't solve the problem.

The only codec pack you'll ever need (for either x86 or x64) is the Vista Codec Pack - Vista Codec Package Homepage (VCP)

AGREED!
Shark007's VCP is a tight, well compiled little pack of all Vista codecs and I've used it since the early days when Shark was still a n00b with codecs like us. He's worked tirelessly to learn and now the VCP is by FAR the best CODEC pack available for Vista.

Now, there is also a setting in Vista to not use thumbnails, only icons and it's in Folder Options - view tab. Make sure that is Unchecked and post back.

I have the vista codec package and it didn't solve my problem.I also double checked all my settings and my avi thumbnails still don't show, only some wmv files do.I read so many different treads with multiple solutions, but nothing worked for me so far. It's been very frustrating and I'm about to give up...
