Sytem Restore gone lazy?

I already increased max allotment from 2GB to 3GB and still, SR is listing only one scheduled restore point at a time. It's supposed to make RP daily and at start up as programmed and Task scheduler check shows it does...but it does not list more than one at a time. However, when I install stuffs (updates), it lists one additional RP but only to maximum of total 2 restore points. I want to see at least 3, 4 tops. I am uncomfy with only two.

Currently, the only RP listed is of three days ago.

You would need to increase the MAX size more to be able to store more restore points.

I noticed that the automatic restore point at startup is flaky and does not always create one. If you want one at every startup, then you can create a task in Task Scheduler to run at startup using the shortcut from OPTION ONE (step 2) here. Be warned though. When you run out of MAX space Vista will replace the oldest restore point with the new one.

Flaky indeed. Three days ago I had 3 rp's (one after update installation and two were scheduled) with only 2GB max allotments. And then listing got stuck on 12/26th, even when task sched shows SR is creating points per scheduled (both daily and at start up). BTW, even with three rp's listed, SR did not use more than 800 MG. so I figured 2 GB are plenty.

The only one currently listed is a scheduled one and it bumped off the one I created few hours prior.

The shortcut you described is too complicated for me and looks too much of modifications and I dunno if I can reverse it. Is it possible, I might just need some adjustments outside default settings in SR tabs Trigger? Actions? Conditions? Settings? Because all my set ups are defaults.

And then again, it was fine the way things were/are only three days ago. Can I have a copy of your own SR setups? (that is if your SR is fine)

The main thing is to increase the MAX restore point storage size so you can have more restore points save and available. You might bump it up to around 10 GB.

I believe it may only create a restore point at startup if it was different than last time. Not sure yet though.

Personally I find having it create one at every startup (well, suppose to) a waste of space. Plus, it will eventually replace your manual restore points when space runs low.

Since you are not comfortable with creating a task, it may be easier for you to run one manually with one of the shortcuts from here.

I just manually created a RP. So now I have two listed. At least I know 2GB can hold two RP's. Tomorrow I will create another one until one gets bumped out to know exactly how many RP's a 2GB allotment can hold.


...but wait, actually 3 days ago I did have 3 listed.

I woke up this morning with 4 restore points listing....with 2GB max allotment. I dunno how. I didn't do nothin'.

..but my PC auto installed two driver updates 8 hours apart while I was asleep(nice to realize I slept like a log), hence the 2 additional restore points. Space allotment check shows I do not have enough space room for 5th restore point, which is just perfect. Now I know 2GB holds max of 4 restore points which has been what I always wanted.

I just dunno why SR went lazy for 4 days (stuck on one RP X 4 days) and all of a sudden just decided to work properly. Hmmm....

I suppose that Vista didn't feel the changes were not worthy of a restore point when it was being lazy.

Hmmmm.....makes sense. So.... Vista is this smart? Can't wait for W7.

OK, I just did 2 DVD backups and now I have six restore points in SR with 2GB max allottment, the additional RP's being the backups.

Confession: This the very first time in 8 yrs of computing that I did backup. (I mean a techie friend always did it for me). Thus, I do not know if it was normal to require 2 dvd's and nearly an hour. Or I did not do it correctly?

Depending on large the drive to backup is, this could be normal. It would be faster and easier to backup on a separate hard drive though if you have one handy.

OK, I woke up in 2009 and SR lists 4 RP's.(two less than just a year ago)

I think I am beginning to understand this RP listing business. It's pretty much like daily backups...when back ups are done when only new programs or files/documents/ stuffs are added to previous system backup file.... not daily total system copying. (My techie friend does daily backups automatically.. which I always refused to do thinking it must be occupying too much space)

And that's why SR did not make any RP in 4 days a week ago...because there was no need to. And depending on RP sizes, at 2GB max allotment, it can list from 2 to 6 RP's.

Now I am ready to move on...to understand shadow copying
