Solved assoc command: "Access is denied"

javayoda

New Member
I was trying to fix the Java .jar association problem I have in Vista x64. I followed steps found on the web but they won't work. I keep getting "Access is denied" when using the "assoc" command (even with admin rights). When I open an command prompt with admin rights and type "assoc", I get the following two lines:

.386=vxfile
Access is denied.

Google hasn't been much help. If anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate it.

re: assoc command: "Access is denied"

Ownership of the which file? The "assoc" command? I can't even find it. Besides, if I assume admin rights, why do I need to take ownership? The "assoc" command without any parameters is supposed to show all file associations...why can't I get that simple step to work?

Oh, I'm sorry. I misread your post. Well, the tutorial will tell you why you sometimes have to take ownership of something even with admin rights. Have you tried temporarily disabling UAC and then trying it?

re: assoc command: "Access is denied"

I temporarily disabled UAC with the same result. Is it possible some registry entries have permissions preventing access? (Just a hypothetical).

re: assoc command: "Access is denied"

As a follow-up I did a regedit search; I can't open the following .jar nodes:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.jar
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Wow6432Node\.jar
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Classes\.jar

I get a message: ".jar cannot be opened. An error is preventing this key from being opened. Details: Access is denied."

Some of the other extensions with the same parent nodes report the same message...others work fine (like .jpg). This happens running regedit with administrator rights. Thoughts?

Hmm, I don't know why you keep getting access denied then. Sorry I don't know what else to suggest, I think a lot of people have problems with the 64 bit java.

re: assoc command: "Access is denied"

Well, this is clearly a Vista problem. Both 32-bit and 64-bit Java work fine. I just want to associate the .jar extension with the java.exe. Normally the Java installer does this. I suspect it can't for the same reason I can't do it manually. The fact that the "assoc" command doesn't work suggests a Vista problem.

Thanks for the help. Any idea where I can "elevate" this issue without spending money?

re: assoc command: "Access is denied"

OK, elevation is only going to give you what you already get by running as administrator. What you need to do is go back to the Take Ownership tutorial and read the part about taking ownership of a reg entry - the Administrator login and set of privileges are superseded in Vista by a higher authority, the NT_SYSTEM authority (used to install programs). Since that is probably associated wit this authority level, even running Regedit as Administrator makes you fall short with the permission level needed to make the association.

however, this indicates a bigger problem as you say the installer itself did not make the association - and I have *never* had a JDK / JRE install *not* make the association.

I think in this case you are going to need to go back and analyze what 'tweaks' you may have performed in the past that may be affecting the current situation. In addition, you'll need to see if the JRE install may have actually not completed everything it was supposed to, *or* if you installed both the JRE and the JDK, that association may have simply gotten mangled, as the JDK already contains the corresponding JRE....

re: assoc command: "Access is denied"

Hi I am not good at Java but try figuring this out,

To address these problems, select the java.exe shortcut from the Start menu and right-click on it. Select Properties, and the property sheet for the shortcut will be displayed. Next, click on the Compatibility tab. It is recommended that you make the following changes:
1. Enable compatibility mode and select Windows XP (Service Pack 2) .....
2. Check the "Disable visual themes" option .....
3. Check the "Disable desktop composition" option.....
4. Check the "Run this program as an administrator" option then try associating .jar extension with java.exe

re: assoc command: "Access is denied"

JohnGalt, that's useful information. I'm a little concerned because there are other nodes in registry hierarchy exhibiting the same behavior...nodes that I don't think are Java related. The failure of the "assoc" command is also troubling.

The only related "tweak" I can remember is turning off UAC once to install TVersity media software. Other than that, I've been relatively hands off. Do you think this could be a security issue - virus, malware, etc?

I did install the 64-bit JDK and JRE (as there is now a pre-release verison that works with 64-bit browsers). I also installed the 32-bit JRE for when I'm in 32-bit Firefox. Everything is working fine other than the .jar file association. I don't believe the pre-release has anything to do with it as I seem to recall the .jar double-click was failing for some time.

I may try uninstalling all Java and retracing my steps to see how the registry entries behave. I'll look closer at the info you provided as well.

My Computer

re: assoc command: "Access is denied"

I uninstalled all Java on my system. All .jar entries disappear from the registry. Makes sense.

I install the latest official JRE from Sun. The .jar keys appear in the registry but the association does not work. In regedit, I get the "Access is denied" message when selecting the key. If I try to edit permissions on the key I get "You do not have permission to view the current permission settings for .jar, but you can make permission changes." Ok. I try to make permission changes. When I add a group and press OK, I get: "Unable to save permission changes on .jar. Access is denied."

Wow.

Is this something I need to be worried about? There are quite a few other non-java keys that behave the same way. I haven't done any tinkering here in the past so now I'm getting worried about the security on the machine.

re: assoc command: "Access is denied"

Hi,
As i visualise your problem, It still falls within Vista issues. As I told u ealier, I am not good at Java, but I had experienced related problems when coding In VB but they were were just Vista Issues. So this is what I did

1.selected the application shortcut or the application itself from program menu or from its location (in your case java.exe) from the Start menu and right-click on it. 2.
4. Check the "Run this program as an administrator" option

Click on OK to save the changes. When you run java.exe, a User Account Control (UAC) dialog will be displayed, asking you to confirm that you wish to execute the program. This is because it's now running with elevated privileges. You may also get a message that the color scheme has been changed to Windows Vista Basic. The Aero interface will be temporarily disabled until you close the IDE, which will resolve the performance issues with the form designer. you may now try to associate the applications

Thanks

As for turning off UAC, if you did it only for the TVersity install and then turned it back on, then no, I don't see how that could affect this issue.

I think the problem is that you're trying to force associations from inside the registry, instead of trying to figure out why the association is simply not being created when you install the JRE.

It is strange that it is not occurring on your system - as a test, create a new user, then install a JDK / JRE and see if it is associated - that will eliminate a user problem.

If you have access to another machine and / or are able to make a small 20 GB partition, you could also try reinstalling a vanilla install of Vista (without a key and no activation, as this is for testing purposes only) and see if the .jar files get associated or not. If they do, then it is obviously with your default Operating system - if they don't, then something else is going on, quite possibly with the use of the Beta installer, which means you may have to revert to the non 64bit plugin containing Update 10 or 11.

I have never had to do that when installing JAVA 1.6 U7+ in Vista, neither x86 nor x86-64 versions.

re: assoc command: "Access is denied"

I was able to get things working by taking ownership of the registry keys in question and then adding full rights for administrators and read rights for users.

I'd almost think it was a recently introduced Java installer bug except for one thing: I can't run "assoc" without an access denied error. That just doesn't seem right.

Anyway, thanks for the advice. I've learned quite a bit.
