mixing dual ram with a single ram??

I have just has one of my 4gb sticks ( one of 4 x 4gb sticks ) go wobbly....

Crazy as it may sound but 8gb ram (older modules ddr2 pc6400) isn't enough for my Photoshop work. I was wondering if it's possible to put in the remaining good sticks back in. 12gb (x3) in total , I'm guessing my mboard would drop the speed to single speed ram instead of dual speed ram....Ram capacity is more import than Ram speed as my images are hitting the Photoshop scratch which is bottlenecking my system.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Should work OK. Just remember to replace the stick with an identical one ASAP to get back full performance.

I would use matching pairs to get dual channel performance.

I'm going to RMA the bad stick so this is just temporary measure.....I just need that extra 4gb.

I'll give it a try and see if the performance hit isn't too bad....

Photoshop CS4 on 64-bit OS can use 16GB. I also setup a 24GB paging to give CS4 40GB + its scratch pad.

CS4 on vistax64 really flies with 16gb, I noticed a dramatic decrease in performance with only 8gb ram as my images generally tend to be between 7 - 10gb ( sometimes projects can triple that ) with all the layers etc.

In the Vista page file, is your 24gb fixed or do you let vista adjust it according to what is needed? I usually just let vista do it's own thing with the exception of putting the page file on a separate drive.
