Desktop icons blank out booting vista

solvalou

New Member
Everytime I boot up vista ultimate 64 when the desktop shows up all icons appear perfectly but after like 5 secons they all blank out and reload one by one. I know it's nothing serious but I hate this kind of behaviour. It looks like altho windows already loaded all icons correctly it tries to refresh them again.

It only happens when windows boots.

Is there a workaround to avoid having the desktop icons refresh like that ?

Try right clicking on the desktop, and look to see if the "hide desktop icons" is checked. If so, uncheck it. I have a feeling that is not the problem though....

Do you have a lot of icons on your desktop?
You might try setting to high performance if you don't already have it set. See if it does anything. You might try rebuilding the cache as well.

Thanks for the help but it didn't work. I tried everything you said and the icons still refresh. Yeah I have a lot of icons on desktop, maybe that's why it's refreshing but still, I don't understand why would it refresh if all icons appear perfectly as soon as the desktop shows up. It looks like there is some option in windows to always refresh icons when you boot windows to make sure everything will look ok and to avoid having corrupt icons. I'm quite sure there must be a way to disable this refresh option tweaking the registry but I have no idea how to do it.

Try googleing it. Works most of the time. And I know the more icons you have, the longer it takes to load.

Yeah, I don't know about any option that would be checked to refresh them but yeah, if you have a lot of icons, they're probably going to refresh like that. The more icons on the desktop, the longer it takes to load them. Might want to look into getting a dock program to put them on like Objectdock or Rocketdock then your desktop would probably be just fine.

I'm glad you found a solution that works for you. I use RocketDock. But both are good, you could try both out and see which you like better. :)

I am not a fan of the docks myself, not really sure why. I am sure they are useful in some cases, but i know my computer well enough that it is just easier for me to run it from the desktop.

Just out of curiosity, why do you guys like using docks? What do you see as the advantages to using them over the desktop?

Well, because sometimes if you have a ton of icons on your desktop then they tend to load up kinda slow and blink when the desktop fist appears after boot up in some cases. The more icons you have, the longer it takes to load um on the desktop. Just a way to easily manage them. Customization, you can autohide the dock, change skins, make it smaller, bigger, put it on the side of the screen, etc. Different ways for different users.

I'm loving docks :)

The advantage of docks over icons on desktop for me is that I set it to auto hide and be "always on top" so when I'm running, say, firefox I don't need to click on "show desktop" to access an icon, I just move the mouse to the top of screen and the dock will show up on top of firefox with all my desktop icons. Love that.
