Vista wants to format all my non blank cds

    Hi All,
I need help. When I insert any non blank homemade cd Vista can't read it and wants to format it. Happens with Autoplay or when I use Windows explorer. Does not matter what is on the cd: music, pictures, data files, etc. The cds work fine in any other pc. If I insert a store bought or commercial made cd, no problems. Only have a problem with homemade ones. The drive is a Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-850s.

    I've done the following:
    1. Uninstalled the driver and reinstalled it.
    2. Added "NoCDBurning" to the registry (possible fix found on other forums)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks Jimmy

Jimmy, when you put the disk into the computer, what happens? Does AutoPlay pop up and tell you that it would like to format the blank disk? Or does it ask to scan for problems (like everytime i plug in my flashdrive)?

Can you see it in windows explorer? i.e. when you look at the cd drive does it say there is a disk in it or not?

If you can see the disk, then right click on it and select "explore" and you should see your files.

Let us know a little more specifics please.

    Lordbob,
Yes Autoplay starts when I insert the cd and wants to format it, explorer wants to format also. I can not access the cd, Vista thinks is a blank disc. Only homemade cds have this problem. Wierd.

Interesting... Perhaps when you burned them you did not close them off, or you burned them incorrectly....... I can imagine this being an irritating problem. My other thought is to try reading them in another CD/DVD drive. It may just be that drive and not vista, which will be TONS easier to fix.

You might consider a new drive then - but to be sure, make sure that there haven't been any recent updates to Vista and / or your CD burning program(s).

Hello, I have a similar problem. If I insert a CD that was not burned on this drive Vista cannot read it. This includes purchased CDs, whether music or data. Explorer simply prompts me to format the CD. If I open a command prompt window I can read the CD and see the files so I know the drive is working properly. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers. I have tried adding registry entries from cdgone.reg referenced on this forum. All CDs seem to work correctly in almost any other system.

    Any help would be wonderful!

Hello lyonspaw, welcome to the forums.

Do you have another CD/DVD drive you can try? Also, try booting into Safe Mode to see if the problem continues.

    Lordbob,

I do not have another drive to use, but followed the suggestion to boot to safe mode. The disk worked as expected in safe mode. Using the same CD tried it in normal mode and no luck! It comes back saying the disk needs to be formatted.

Interesting. So it worked normally in safe mode? Ok, try this: go into device manager, and select that CD/DVD drive. Click roll back or uninstall driver. Then let Vista install its own drivers.
