I just had to replace a drive here when at first it refused to even see dvd-rw disks in the drive. At first a new cable worked well for all disks until just lately hearing a grinding sound while trying to boot off of a live cd. New cable or drive? I tried both out here.

With the cable replaced the next thought would be the connection on the board since the drive seems to work well on other systems. Have you tried a different drive on this one inplace of the problem drive?

If you see another drive run into the same problems since Windows has been reinstalled ruling out an OS problem of some type you may be seeing a cold solder point on the connector itself. But if another works normal leave that one in and put the problem drive on a system you know it works on.
