Pretty Slow Scans

I

ilyabyk83

Hello people. I have one big problem. My scans take VERY long time to complete. Over an hour. Two internal drives:
1 - 495 G - 1 G Taken
2 - 232 G - 58.3 G Taken (my OS is on it)
And one external, which is disconnected for the time of the scans.
You can tell me what to run to show you the exact memory, if you wish. Thank You for your help.

Meaning, AV scans?

Scans as in Anti-virus scans? Or scans as in put the picture in the computer scan?

Its going to take how ever long to scan your drive cause you have 58.3GB used on your drive. Also you can make it not scan your games folders and what ever else you don't want to be scanned.

Do you see the amount of RAM I have, and my CPU speed??

What's your anti virus product? Is it the automated nightly scans (assuming they're being used) that is slow, or when you manually kick something off?

There are different levels of scans as you're probably aware (high level, deep, super deep) that behave differently, plus other options such as whether to scan within .zip files and so forth

These are scans that I start myself. Lavasoft Ad-Aware 2007 (uninstalled at the moment) and Kaspersky Internet Security 2009. I run both on my own. Ad-Aware scans (usually FULL scans) I run 4-6x a week, and my virus scans I usually run every other week. This all has dramatically changed, after I added the second hard drive of 465 G to my computer. Either of two full scans took 20-25 minutes to complete. That second new HD has my *.pst file of my Microsoft Outlook, which is pretty big, 2.5 G. But there is nothing else on it, really. I did a format and reinstalled my OS, but nothing really changed, I think this all has to do with that second drive. But the only thing on it, is my *.pst file. Any thoughts??

If you run a scan yet exclude the new HD, does the timing go back to 20-25 minutes?

If you then run a scan on only the new HD, does it take a long time?

Is both Ad-Aware and Kaspersky taking approx 2 hours when scanning both drives?

Both take the same amount of time. Yes
Now, I don't think the new HD has anything to with it. Like I posted earlier, there is not much on it.
I'm afraid - Exclusion - is not an answer here. Something needs to be tweaked. I even reformatted my system cause of this. No difference.

Do you maybe want some screen shots??

I don't understand why you don't want to *try* something when you stated that prior to adding the second hard drive, it only took 20-25 minutes. Logic tells me you should exclude this new drive and see if the time taken to scan returns to 20-25 minutes

I can't help you if you're not willing to try things

I doubt that this will make any difference. But how do I start "chkdsk"? I know where to find Defrag.

This is odd!! This is just my one drive. The one that was in here from the bigenning.

I found out the problem!!! I have 232 G and 495 G hard drives, even though that the big drive is empty, that is why my scans are so slow!!!

Does anybody know if this possible, to find an enclosure for 495 G hard drive, that will only run of one USB cable??

My Computer

USB drives are not that fast with small files. I would recommend firewire 800 drives for performance. USB has a lot of overhead on small files.
