Please help!! I don't want to lose all my files!

Hi,

I have a massive problem. I need to reboot my Vista Ultimate (I know how to do this, I'll use the Recovery CD that came with my laptop), but I don't want to lose the files on my hard drive.

I also have no way to access my hard drive at the moment (I tried restarting and pressing F8 and all I got was the message I initially got, below).

Here's what happened:

I got impatient at my ASUS M51 T9500 laptop freezing, so I pressed the "On/Off" button for a long time, got the computer to turn off and then pressed "On" again. The computer started, but Vista wouldn't come up. I got this error message, which I keep getting when I do "Ctrl Alt Delete" (I don't know why I tried that, I just hoped it would help) and when I restarted and pressed F8:
Windows Boot Manager
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert the Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, then click "next."
3. Click "Repair your computer."
If you do not...bla bla...contact the administrator...bla bla
File: \Windows\system32\winload.exe
Status: 0xc000000f

Can anyone help me, please??

Sorry, I'm not a computer pro, so I don't know if what I've done counts as "repairing" Vista. I've tried pressing F8 after restarting it and pressing "Ctrl Alt Delete", if that counts.
I can't access my computer at the moment (Vista won't come up), so I can't go in to Control Panel or anything like that. I need to reboot it (or so the error message says) but like I said, I have to find a way to save my files first.
Thanks again!

that shouldnt make you lose all your files, all it should do is recover vista so it can load up.

Hi MrNeeds,

Thanks for your reply.

The disk I have- "Windows Vista Software Recovery"- offered me 3 options-
"
1) Recover Windows to first partition only.
This option will delete only the first partition, allowing you to keep other partitions, and create a new system partition as drive "C".

2) Recover Windows to entire HD.
This option will delete all partitions from your hard disk drive and create a new system partition as drive "C".

3) Recover Windows to entire HD with 2 partition.
This option will delete all partitions from your hard disk drive and create two new system partitions "C" (60%) and "D" (40%).
"

As far as I understood, if I picked option 1 (the best for preserving my files, the majority of which are on "C" drive), it would delete everything on "C" drive and fix Vista.

Did I misunderstand this?

Can you boot into safe mode? Does it attempt to run chkdsk?

Hi,
I can't get into safe mode- I tried what my friend said (with F8) and it went black for ages and then just showed me the "Windows Boot Manager" message again. I don't know what chkdsk is, so I guess not. It goes blank (black screen) for ages, then it shows the message again, no matter what I do.

Hi mdi, seems like option number 1 is what you what to do. But before doing that, turn off computer, remove battery, replace battery and turn on computer to see if it helps if you haven't done this yet.

Hope this helps.

Recovery CD usually recovers back to the factory level by deleting partitions. Deleting a partition is a bad idea. Can you do a non-destructive repair? Does it give you any options for an administrative repair where you can run sfc/scannow to fix the OS.

It seems that you don't have Vista installation disc. Without it you can not run check disc.
When you first turn your computer on start pressing F8 like mad man and see if that yields any results, if not that your boot manager is corrupted.
Best option is to take hard drive out, put it in another machine, get your desired files and reinstall vista. IMO much quicker way than trying to fix the problem.
Second solution is to download Ubuntu live CD, change BIOS setting to boot from it,burn all your files onto a CD or DVD and reinstall.
Maybe other members will have different ideas

you can visit this link
Windows Vista Recovery Disc Download — The NeoSmart Files you have choice of 32 bit or 64. You need to know which Ultimate you have (x32) or (x86)
and this link with screen shots how to do a repair.
Windows Vista Ultimate - Repair StartUp

But remember you MUST CHANGE BOOT ORDER TO BOOT FROM CD.

I hope this helps.

If you want to recover using the OEM disk you have, it will delete the partition containing Windows and reinstall Vista.
There is a way to recover the data on your drive if you have failed to use Vista's backup utility to backup your files and data.

This program will allow you to access files folders by bypassing Windows- boots off disk you will create

You could install a new hard drive. Remove your existing drive to protect data. Do your recovery DVD install to it. Reinstall your old hard drive and move the data over.
