Success Story with XP Upgrade

Hi,

I'm new to this site but I wanted to share that after hearing and reading so many horror stories I finally decided to go for it and upgrade form XP to Vista. Call it blind luck but so far so good and I'm up and going:) I did upgrade my RAM to (2) 1G modules and also am using the (2) 256mb modules as well. It does appear that the hard drive is always busy but I have found that it is due to the daily Windows update each time I wake the my machine. How many updates does one machine need ? Is there a way to schedule the update schedule ?

Welcome to the forums, RosseJ.

The hard-disk activity you noticed will subside over time. It is initially the Search Indexer doing it's job, and likely also the Disk Defragmenter. To make the indexer complete it job quicker, I suggest the following:
  1. Click the Start orb
  2. Click "Control Panel"
  3. Click "System and Maintenance"
  4. Click "Indexing Options"
  5. Click "Modify"
  6. Click "Show all locations" (you will need to respond to UAC)
  7. Under "Change selected locations", add check marks to the hard disk locations you wish to have indexed, or remove the check marks to those you don't want indexed. I like to have ALL my drives selected.
  8. Click "OK"
  9. The top of the "Indexing Options" window will indicate the progress of the indexing. When done, it will show "Indexing Complete". I usually leave my computer on and idle (not in standby mode) overnight to allow the indexing to complete, at which time I click "Close"
  10. You can close the indexing options window if you like before the job is done, and continue to use your computer, but indexing will then take longer to get done.
