Solved Can the startmenu area be resized

Hi to explain better what I'm asking look at the picture.

I want to lower the height of the start menu so I wont have all that empty space.

Is it possible ?

Hi hahallur and welcome to Vista Forums :party:

To correct this, right click a blank spot on the task bar and select Properties. You can also do this by right clicking on the Start Orb and clicking on Properties from there. Either way will bring up this dialogue box:

Click the Start Menu tab.

Click Customize...

Click on Use Default Settings and then click OK twice to exit the dialogues.

Hi there,

I'm having the same problem as the initial poster, I'm trying to resize the start menu to get rid of all that ugly blank space that just seemed to appear from nowhere!

Followed Dwarf's instructions to the letter, but there is no change.

Any help much appreciated,

Erm, sorry I don't know how to take a snapshot of the start menu, but the space is more or less identical to the image posted above by hahallar, just with different applications obv.

Hi Ben,

Click the Start Orb to bring up the menu and then press the PrtScn key. Next, open Paint. Click on Edit and then Paste. Alternatively, user the shortcut Ctrl+V. Hi Steve,

There is nothing wrong here, it looks perfectly normal to me. If you are on about the white space on the left hand side, that will fill up with programs as you use them. Hi Ben,

I think you want the want the Start Menu to be shorter, like mine.

Follow Dwarf's post on customizing the Start Menu and dot the "Don't display this item" for all the things you don't need in the right hand pane of the Menu - the fewer you have there, the shorter it will be.

It's more the left hand collumn that was bugging me, one minute all the programs were pinned to the start menu, next they had gone. Not really a big issue, and they seem to be filling up again as I use new programs. Anyways, thanks for the timely help guys, nice to have a easy forum to turn to for computer novices like myself.

Ok guys, sorry to bring this back up, but this is starting to get on my wick. The blank space now takes up a good 3" of the start menu. As I've pinned new apps to the start menu this white space increases and the overall menu size increases accordingly, rather than shrinking to fit if that makes sense.

I've tried all the solutions offered here, ie, unchecking and rechecking the store and display, restore default etc. What gives?

Hi Ben,

At last, I have been able to reproduce your problem. With the default menu settings, there are 2 items pinned on the left hand side, these being Internet and E-mail. Underneath these, the space is reserved for the recently used programs, the number of which is set to 9 by default. If more programs are pinned, then the size of the menu will grow to ensure that this number of recently used programs can still be displayed. The solution is either to remove one or more of the pinned programs, or to reduce the number of recently used programs that are displayed.

Thanks for the reply, I've reduced the number of recently used programs that are displayed to 2, and the blank space has decreased slightly, but still around 2".
Is there any way to fill this space with apps without increasing the overall start menu size? That is, as it was when first installed?

Hi dave,

That made a difference - Help and Support is directly above the Power Button - space on left is reduced.

The only way to reduce that further is to not display some of the items in the right (dark ) pane. On mine I only choose to display half a dozen on the right.

Then you can choose which apps. to pin in whatever space still remains on the left.

Alternatively - if you want it the same height as it is now - but want the left to have some recently used apps., set it to 5.
