Backup did not complete successfully.

Backup did not complete successfully.
I am running Business Vista 32bit on a HP Compaq desktop with 3 GB of RAM and 100GB hard disk drive. Over the past two months I have had my document folder backed up to a W2K Server folder-automatically.

Last week, I got the following error message: "The backup did not complete successfully. A shadow copy could not be created for the following reasons: Incompatible version of the serializing package (0x81070724)."

I went to another Business Vista computer on the same network, and backed up to the same Server folder (Userbackups) without any problems.

I am not interested in Acronis True Image 2009. I would like to continue using the automatic backup feature that came with Vista.

Thanks for your help -

Error message when you try to perform a file backup operation or a system restore operation in Windows Vista: "Incompatible version of the serializing package. (0x80070724)"
A fix was issued to resolve this problem. Note- you will be resetting the shadow copy storage size, then resetting it back to default. enter the following into the command prompt and note the MAX size.

vssadmin list shadowstorage

On my Post of January 12, 2009, I received a response via my email, which had support links for the "collapse and Expand this image," but those links did not contain any information other then a blank page.

I appreciate the fast response from the Vista Forum: My question is, do I need the information in these blank links to resolve my issue about "Incompatible version of the serializing package?"

Thanks in advance.

Follow the walkthrough from Microsoft in the linked fix.

Backup did not complete successfully

I received a response from the Forum addressing this issue; however, when trying to implement the resolution as stated in Article ID: 940970, line #5, "vssadmin resize," an error pops up saying it is not a recognizable command line internat/external.

And when I input the next command as listed: shadowstorage /for=c: /on=c: /maxsize=300mb, I get the following error - "not recognized as an internal / external"

Also, when the Forum sent me a response on 1/12/09 via email, they included links to blank pages (with nothing on the pages). The only link that worked was the Article link to ID KB940970, which I followed.

Also, in the same email response of 1/12/09, in the paragraph: "To resolve this problem, remove the snapshot files that contain the corrupted metadata. To do this, follow these steps:"

  1. Click *Start* Collapse this imageExpand this image
I have no clue what you (they) are talking about. Where do I click *Start* and where do I find this imageExpand this image?

If you (they) are referring to the Start menu in Windows, fine, but I am not going to find Collapse this imageExpand this image there (something is missing).

Could someone please help me out, and fill in the blank links and blank spots.

Thanks in advance

You're not going to fix the problem unless you implement the solution as given by Microsoft. Your only other option is a restore/reinstall.

You have the commands wrong (copy and past the following in cmd ran as admin):

vssadmin list shadowstorage

vssadmin Resize ShadowStorage /For=C: /On=C: /Maxsize=300MB

then re-enter the command with your original Maxsize value replacing the 300mb entry.

(note- this command assumes C: is the drive Windows is installed on)
