Advantages of Vista 64 over Win XP X64?

I'm looking at building a new AMD quad core system and using Windows XP x64 PRO
(Real Time Strategy gaming computer)

But first i would not mind hearing if there are any real advanages to going with Vista 64 instead?

I had xp x64, got rid of it when I installed Vista x64.

You will be hard pressed to find XP x64 hardware drivers, and software that supports XP x64 is almost non-existant. Even Microsoft is not supporting XP x64.

Vista x64 has full driver/software support.

Sounds like a really good reason. Plus, a lot of new games coming out will not work on XP, and you can still run those golden oldies on your Vista with XP compatibility mode (such as starcraft and older)

I'd stick to windows XP. Vista is a nightmare and unless you are doing a full upgrade of everything then you might find that things like your TV tuner card or network modem or printer might not work. A lot of old software won't install right either so you will be running them out of a VM.

And in some instances, you won't need any compatibility mode settings! I've only checked so far with a few games, but Diablo 1 and Diablo 2 for example run 100% error free on Vista x64 without the need to apply any compatibility settings (if you don't install them to "C:\Program File (x86)"...

That just depends really on how oldthe software is, really. 16-Bit programs (or programs that use 16-bit installers) will not work at all on Vista x64.

And really, before you upgrade to ANY operating system, you should check for driver availability.

If you have a newer computer, then hardware is not an issue. Also, Windows has a vista compatibility tool, that checks to see if you can indeed run it.

My system will be basic, AMD Quad core, AMD 790FX/SB750 motherboard,
ATI 3870, CL X-Fi, Lite-on Burner, Epson printer.
Games C&C 3, SupCom, The Witcher.
Would the AMD south bridge SB750 have full support for Win XP x64?

If it works for vista, it should work for xp (in hardwares case)

So yeah you should be good.

Best to go to the motherboard manufacturers website and check availability of Windows XP x64 drivers. You didn't mention who made the board, Asus, Gigabyte, MSI?

And one key point to remember is that Windows XP x64 failed in the mainstream arena because of lack of driver availability. Best really to go with Vista x64, as manufacturers are more likely to support a newer OS as opposed to one that is no longer supported by MS...

I will have to put my vote in for Vista x64 Ultimate.
I was running XP x64 and I personally found some driver support to be lacking.
Also if you have a Zune you will have no luck with XP x64, there is not Zune software
for XP x64. I am running a Q9300 (quad core) and Vista SCREAMS with all that power.
I to play a lot of RTS games (Heats of Iron Anthology, Company of Heroes, Supreme Commander, and so on...) and I have had no problems at all. I would have to say my overall experience with Vista x64 has been better than with XP x64.

I have Vista 64, and I have not had any driver or gaming issues with it.

Even though there is no official driver for my ancient HP psc1210 printer for Vista 64, the default built-in driver works flawlessly with my printer/scanner.

I play all sorts of games with Vista 64, and I have had no problem with any games (Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike Source, FarCry 2, Mass Effect).
