Question regarding the "choose details" list

My "size" option appears to have gone missing, and I'm not sure why.

I searched with google, as well as these forums, though I could find no answer to my problem. (Though that doesn't mean one hasn't been posted; my searching skills may just be crappy.)

Regardless, has anyone had this, or a similar issue, occur? Or does anyone know how to add your own "details" to choose from so I can get it back manually?

I saw this: Folder Size for Windows Explorer

I probably need something along those lines, but for the size option instead...

Also, if I'm somehow just staring at the list and missing it even after scanning through each item, please let me know. (Picture included to rule out/verify idiocy on my part.)

OK..........

For what? Windows explorer default window size?
Or size of file in windows explorer?

I am not sure are to which. Or something else.

Perhaps that will help.

That was the first thing I attempted when I got here, just to see if a "reset" of sorts would bring it back.

I'm talking about size being removed from the list you reach when you right click in explorer, put your mouse over "sort by," and then click "more."

Or, going under the menu bar, selecting "view," and then selecting "choose details."

My apologies if I was not specific enough in my initial post.

Thanks for responding though.

Ok. So you want the option to sort by file size correct??
So my tutorial did not help for you. Ok.

Let me check.
Check How To See Folder Size first, though I dont think thats what you want.
Customize Columns

That second one might help.

As I said, they're missing from the list entirely; neither link you provided helped.

I don't know how to be more specific in order to prevent further confusion without repeating what I said in my first few posts though.

I know what you mean, and I can find nothing on here about that. Have you googled the problem??

The answer to that is in my first post.

This thread was made in the hopes that someone had a problem like this already, and they could provide the solution (and the reason for it happening) without any effort beyond making a reply.

You don't need to waste your time looking for the answer if you don't already know, I spent a bit of time searching for it myself, which is why I came here. (I don't think it's been posted on these forums, nor have I found it anywhere using google.)

Thanks for the effort though.

Lol.

No offense but you didnt try very hard searching... I found it in about 30 secs.

Here are two fixes depending on what you are comfortable with:

1) Try uninstalling the update "Windows Search 4.0"

2) If you are comfortable editing the registry, try this one first: Open the Start Menu and search "regedit" and hit enter. This will bring up the registry editor. Then follow this path to the file:
HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PropertySystem\PropertySchema\CachedSchema.
I need to finish looking into that, let me know if the first option works first ok?

Ok, so I finished checking out the problem. It appears to be an error with the Windows Search 4.0 update, and can be solved two ways.

The first is to uninstall the update, as I said above.

The second is easier and will let you keep that update, ONLY do this if you are comfortable editing your registry!
Follow the path above (HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PropertySystem\PropertySchema\CachedSchema) and delete the key "Cached Schema". Then restart your computer, and it should work.

Hope you get it solved and let us know,

Interesting, the update was within the period of updates I removed when I first noticed something changed with the explorer. (I knew I used the size option to sort through my downloads on the day before Christmas Eve, so I used add/remove programs, viewed installed updates, and uninstalled all the updates up until that day.)

Lol, I guess failing my google search is okay if I went ahead and just tried to brute force locate where the issue was, Lol.

I'm okay with editing the registry, though two questions regarding that before I do it:

If I edit the registry now, then reinstall the updates including Search 4.0, will it "override" my edit, and cause me to have to re-edit it?

Also, just in case either I or the instructions attempt to break my computer, will setting a restore point prior to the edit save it so I can go back and not worry about it if it does screw something up?

My Computer

Great questions.

Ok, re-update first. That will install the deleted update and shouldn't overwrite the registry.
YES. Do either back up or set a restore point.

NOW go ahead and edit the registry. Then restart, and hopefully it will be fixed.

My best guess is that the Size checkbox is there, but you missed it, having burned out your eyeballs looking through all the ridiculous obsolete options like "Car Phone" and "Telex".
