Defragging D?

Aigurs

My OS is Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit, SP1. I purchased my desktop approximately a year and a half a go and the default Defragmenter was set to once a week for both C: and D: and I have left it that way ever since.

However (and I am not too computer savvy, unfortunately), I have read that since D: in my Vista OS is merely a locked Recovery, it should never be defragged. Is this true, and for all the time I have been defragging it weekly, could this have hurt System recovery should I ever need to use it?

Any advice would be appreciated and apologies for poor English.

As far as I can see there shouldn't be a problem with defrag, I know everything works out ok in XP, so my guess would be that Vista should be the same.

Hi Aigurs and welcome to Vista Forums :party:

There should be no problems with leaving the Defragmenter set at its defaults. However, if the D: drive in your system is the recovery partition, you should ensure that you do not use it to store your own files. Also, even if the partition isn't completely used, you must not shrink it as that space is used as temporary storage for file manipulation by the recovery software.

G'Day Aigurs,

To answer your question first.
I'm in a similar situation and set-up to yourself [check My System Specs], and likewise, automatically run Defragmentation of C: and D: drives on a weekly basis. I have had the need a couple of times to do a System Restore, and have noticed no ill effects of the defragmentation, so there shouldn't be any problems. I also run Auslogics defragmentation from time to time.

It is a very useful and easy run defragmentation tool listed here;

Vista Forums>Software>Free Software List for Vista, or here;

http://www.vistax64.com/software/115872-free-software-list-vista.html

and is available free for download from Auslogics, here;

Welcome!
Welcome to Vista Forums Aigurs :D , and all the best for 2009 from Aussie Mate!! You will find a great bunch of people here, always willing to help you if you get into any strife, and who are ready to answer any questions about Vista and all of its workings and interactions etc., that you may have. I had no problems understanding your English at all. And if you don't understand an answer that is given, just post again asking for a simpler explanation.

Your 'My Systems Specs'

It will also help the helper " :geek: !!", if you just take a couple of minutes to read the Post info in the link at the bottom of my page, and then go to your User CP to put as much detail into your 'My System Specs', as you possibly can. It sure saves typing it out over and over again when you need assistance, and will often mean a quicker reply from the 'helpers'......" :geek: :sleepy: :cry: :geek: :cool: !!!!"....Weird bunch that they are.

Your 'Little Helper' - Vista Forums SysInfo Tool.

You can access your system information quite easily, by downloading an extremely useful tool from Vista Forums>Tutorials>Software. With this tool, you'll be able to find most of the information for your ' My System Specs' input. Access the tool here, and just follow the simple instructions for downloading;

VistaForums SysInfo Tool

I downloaded mine to the Desktop, where it sits, ready for use in any situation. However, thanks must go to Shao 128 and dmex for giving us the use of this great little number.

All Vista Forums Information.....FAQs.
The best method to find information about anything in this Vista Forum, is to just click on FAQ in the bar at the top of each page. You'll find this to be one of the best Forum resources, and the amount of detail in FAQs is well presented and easily read.

Any Problems in setting up? Just ask.

Enjoy your stay Mate. :D Cheers. sassofalco

Thank you all very very much. It is an ease of my mind. I had (in the meantime, for a week) turned off Defragger for D but will now turn it back on for the weekly defragmentation.

Much thanks to all of you!
