hardrive spinning at full speed for hours everyday

My hard drive has started to spin at full speed for very long periods of time (hours) everyday. I intially thought someone had hijacked my computer but have done the following; run spyware,anti-virus,with no results, tried increasing firewall security, disconnected internet connection, went into Task Manager and no applications or processes are running, disabled some tasks in Task Scheduler that were running to no avail.Went into the start-up menu and add/remove programs and do not see any unrecognized programs. I have a Q6700 [email protected] with 6gb of memory running vista 64 bit home premium with a Hitachi HDS721075KLA330 hardrive. Any help would be appreciated

Yeah its not supposed to do that.....

Do you have another HDD in that system?

That is a distinct possibility. If it does not do the same thing in another PC, then it is a problem with the controller. If it does spin all the time, then the HDD could be bad, though it still works. In that case a replacement might be a necessary precaution.

Auto defragmenting drive? Indexing files? Disk activity is normal even when computer seems idle.

Yes, but the way xhibit described it, it seemed like it was more of a working hard noise, not the normal spin noise. Though it could just be a loud drive.

The drive will spin for say 2 hours at screaming full speed, not something you would hear in the normal course of use, then slow down , like it's finishing some task then spin back up and eventually go silent. Seems to happen a couple of times a day. Hard to tell because I do not sit in front of it all day. It's under warranty with the Geek squad and there are two people there I trust who have been extremely helpful in the past. Just have to get up there in the next few days. I'll post what I find out.

When it speeds up like that, check the processes and see what is running. There must be something, because drives just dont do that.

Ok, hard drives don't have high speeds, they're either spinning at their rated RPM or they're not spinning at all, there is no in between AFAIK, I think you need to look elsewhere for the source of the noise, or the bearings are going south.

Dave,
Thanks a million, I did not know that a hard drive only spins at one speed (Its rated RPM). The "shot bearing" comment made me immediately open the case and look and hear around. There are three fans inside and the one that sits directly above the NVIDIA 9400GS graphics card was the culprit. I'll bring it up to Best Buy to have it replaced. What a relief that was all it was. I owe you one.

So it was a loose fan huh?

Well good detective work. Good job Davejb! Also thanks for the info, I did not think that. However, can you back up your RPM claim with fact? Just so we are completely sure.

That was the reason for the AFAIK disclaimer :D
Just did a bit of research and it seems that they do now exist in specific models, being touted as (god help me) "green" hard drives  still pretty expensive though, $300 plus for a 1TB.
