Super Long Reboot times (again...)

Hi guys I've been scanning the vista forums for a while now and must say that the advice and tutorials given here are by far the best that I've seen so I've come to you in the hope that someone has experienced this and actually managed to fix it.

Despite the fact that this is almost a repost in that so many people have complained of the same issue, I have tried all the fixes that I have seen suggested to others, and thusfar nothing has worked for me.

The Problem: After hitting restart or turning the machine on after shut down the screen remains black for anywhere from 5-15 minutes, after this the bootup runs as normal and takes around 50-60 seconds if that.
The problem started shortly after I installed Vista Home Prem. x64 on my new machine, originally the machine restarted fine, then after a few software installs of sound/gfx/mobo etc. drivers (and maybe sp updates), the reboot time suddenly skyrocketed (This was before any extra hardware installation and unneccessary software installation).

System Specs:
OS: Vista Home Prem. x64 SP1
Mobo: Asus P5Q-E iP45 Socket 775
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4Ghz (not overclocked)
RAM: 4gb PC2 (2x2)
GFX: NVidia GeForce GTX 260
SFX: Onboard
HDD x 4 :
1TB Maxtor Diamondmax 22 SATA (2 partition with system and drivers only on one)

200Gb Maxtor 6Y2 Sata (Added after Problems Started)
60Gb Maxtor 6Y0 Ide (No Data Stored) (Added after Problems Started)
1TB WD 10EAVS Sata (External) (Added after Problems Started)

Fixes:

1. Originally I wondered if the machine was just booting using one CPU so I tried a tutorial by Brink to make sure that all 4 were used. This affected the boot time only after the 5-15 min blank period.

2. Using 'Computer Management > Event Viewer > Applications > Service Logs' I looked for the eventid's beginning in the 100's, a few entries were present and one showed an unusually long time when running a facet of Media Centre. I have now stopped the .exe running on startup and taken control of the file and renamed it to be sure (not a vital .exe). This made no change to the Boot time

3. I cleared the logs and rebooted, now only 2 logs present. The only entry that seemed wierd was this:

BootTsVersion 2

BootStartTime 2009-01-19T10:53:38.671Z

BootEndTime 2009-01-19T10:57:14.079Z

The Boot start and end time show a 4 minute delay that seems to correspond to my problem (although I timed this restart at 8 minutes) but either no other info is given here or I just dont understand the info given here.

4. HDD removal - I started by removing the external drive and rebooting, no change, then unplugged each internal drive one by one (except the os drive obviously) and still no change

If anyone can shed any light on this it would greatly ease my pain, is there any way that I can test my RAM? also I dont reboot often but after a week of not rebooting I was told that my system memory was low so I couldnt play video files.
This seems kind of obvious after a week but my old single core cpu with 500mb of ram could stay on for months and have no problem. Now I have a high spec machine with 4gb ram and its playing up when under the same duress, I cant make sense of it.
One last question, I have 4 slots for RAM and I am using 2 of them, they are coloured yellow/black/yellow/black from left to right and my RAM is installed in the yellow slots. Should changing this around make any difference at all?

Thanks in advance for any and all advice

Regards

This cut my restart time down from about 10min to 7min:

How to speed up Vista shutdown time

Does it sometimes feel as if it takes forever for your Vista computer to shut down? You can speed it up a bit by editing the registry. As always, back up the registry key first and be careful:

  1. Open your registry editor and navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control
  2. In the right pane, right click the value WaitToKillServiceTimeout
  3. Select Modify
  4. Change the value (default is 20000) to a lower number, such as 5000
  5. Close the registry editor
NOTE: If you set the timeout value too low (such as 1000 or 3000), some programs may not be able to close in time.

PS: I timed my old laptop with XP & it takes less than 3min & it has exactly the same in the startup. Check what you have in startup, Click Start / Run, type msconfig / OK / startup then uncheck anything that you don’t need.
It seems that on this forum no one wants to hear anything negative about Vista!!!

Thanks for the response mc, unfortunately this helped me by less than a minute and did not seem to affect the long blackscreen before bootup.

Anyone else got any ideas?

If it's hanging/delaying before boot, then it's most likely a BIOS setting. Check the boot settings in BIOS to see which device is set to for the primary boot device.

The RAM should indeed be in Yellow/Yellow as it would be running in dual channel mode.

I just noticed you tried removing HDD's etc. Did you remove both data and power cables?

The low memory sounds like a huge memroy leak in a n app. You still have the pagefile enabled?

Just tried this smart, it was set to boot off floppy 1st so for a minute I thought you had it. Its set to boot from the hdd now but it didnt have an affect. BAH!

Yeah I removed both cables from the discs but left them plugged into the board.

I also get a message prior to bootup saying that express gate is not installed, I've dismissed this since I dont really care about accessing the internet prior to startup. Any idea if that could be causing some form of conflict?

My Computer

Just another thought since I never grasped Primary and extended partitions. All my hdds except the main disc are single primary partitions. The main disc has 2 partitions both of which are primary for some reason. Does it matter if both are primary? Should the non os partition be extended instead?

Regards

My Computer

Express gate should display for 10-15 secs at most. If you don't use it, you can disable it in BIOS anyway, but I doubt it's causing that big a delay.

How about the marvell IDE boot rom. Enabled/Disabled?

Disable the cd/dvd in the boot menu? (with my cd/dvd enabled, it takes a fair bit of time to pass that without a disc in the drive)

Also try removing the cables from the mobo itself. If that makes any difference,re-plug one in at time.

What about other USB devices attached? It does sound like something is taking a long time to initialize.

EDIT:

No, the partitions shouldn't be an issue, unless it's trying to boot of a drive that doesn't contain any boot data. The way you have it set up is fine.

Well you could always enter BIOS and disable the Express Gate feature, it's just a feature that comes with the new ASUS Deluxe mobos...

No, it does not matter about the primary partitions, you may have as many primary partitions as you like. They just shouldn't be both ACTIVE. Just the Windows boot one.

Have you considered a BIOS update or entering BIOS and selecting LOAD DEFAULTS at the exit menu?

FINALLY! Its working nicely now, i got bored of changing one thing at a time so heres what I did:

Disabled CD ROM boot completely (it was set as 3rd priority before this)
Disabled Express Gate in BIOS
Instead of prioritising the HDD in order of boot preference I disabled all apart from the main disc

One of these things dropped the restart from around 10 minutes to less than 1 minute.

Thanks for the input guys, reps to you.

If you Disabled CD ROM boot completely doesn’t that mean if your PC ever crashes that you won’t be able to boot off your Vista CD or Boot Disk? Then any backups or Image that you have on your ex HD would be useless. I use Acronis TrueImage11 with my whole C drive backed up on each of my 2 ex HD's & have had to boot off that disk but if my CD Rom was disabled that wouldn’t work???

mc1548, if that ever happens, all you would have to do is go back to the BIOS and Enable "Boot with CD first", restart and now the CD is Enable again... AFAIK.

I think my laptop is F2 to get into Bios so I guess if my laptop won’t start I can still get into Bios?

For some reason my F8 key stopped working & I’m not sure if the F2 key works, I’m going to have to try it.

If you ever need to boot from a disc, then you just re-enable it BIOS, then once your done, disable it again.
