Processor/motherboard issues.

Hey.

Just recently bought and installed a new processor AMD Athlon X2 64 6000+ AM2 and flashed bios because my motherboard had difficulties to recognize the processor. After this im getting bluescreen with IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL constantly after comp has been running for a while. So go to the store and buy a new motherboard or? :) I have also tried to flash several versions of bios but that only made things worse.

Dumb question but did you set your BIOS to Default and clear CMOS after switching the CPU? I asked this because I went from an E6300 to an E7200 and didn't noticed anything wrong until a couple of weeks later and someone suggested I do that.

Ok, this looks like it could be a temp problem, or some bad hardware. Try this: Run the computer till the error pops up, then reboot into BIOS and check the CPU temps. If it is overheating, that is a major problem, and will need fixing. If the CPU is not hot then, it could be RAM. Take out the sticks that are in it now, and put in some sticks you have used and are good. That should fix it. If not, then there are deeper problems.

You should load "optimized defaults" and then adjust memory setting so it fits ram. Timings and voltages. Cant be sure Auto/SPD/Default is correct. Go through all windows in bios and edit. Optimized defaults is only a fixed preset.

Cpu should be compatible. If you screwed up and it is running very hot even if idle you wont be the first :)

Run Memtest86+ or Windows memory diagnostics http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/65361-memory-diagnostics-tool.html?ltr=M

Could also be power supply because new cpu require much more power than the old. 6000 is one of the most powerhungry cpus. You also have semi-taxing video card. If only adequate before psu will be underpowered now - hard to say but could be.

I have set bios to default several times and also cleared CMOS. Bios settings have been default with the old processor as well and it was running fine. The CPU is running about 40-50celsius while doing some random stuff like browsing or using skype. I could try the memory although they have been working just fine with the old processor. And I ran the vistas own memory-test and no problems there.
PS: Sorry for the chapter and grammar issues I’m writing this as fast as I can because I think its Blues-screen time again soon :D. Don’t know why but I have this fuzzy feeling that if I go and buy a new motherboard and hook it up I will have a rock solid system again.

Whoops forgot to tell you guys one more thing that i found odd.

I downgraded bios one notch and my comp would not boot up it always crahsed to the windows loading screen. It recognized my processor but i had to take the multiplier of the processor down from 15.5 to something lower, although 15.5 should be correct because 15.5x200=3100mhz.

For dk70, my old processor was AMD Athlon 4200+ X2 64 AM2 and my power source is Antec 430W True power.

No, correct multiplier is 15 - use that with latest bios.

I have a 6000, no chance of running 3100mhz without BSOD. Bios could be misreading CPU-ID - or just be buggy. Doublecheck settings.

Ram speed increases when you overclock cpu - unless forced not to. You say memory passes test but using a lower speed might be worth a try. So manually force 667 speed.

Speed. Look here http://www.phoronix.net/image.php?id=530ℑ=abit_kn9u_bios5_lrg

Set it to manual and then chose speed or Dram Clock.

Also where you set timings if they are not properly detected by bios. Since memtest pass it should be ok, at least not cause such problems, so dont touch other settings.

What power supply you have?

Ah I see about the psu. Well is it a newer version (2.0) or the old because I doubt very much older version can pull this off. Could get critical. If newer model you should be ok.

Yeah it is a 2.0 model. Well i'll try to multiplier thing out and try to set it from 15.5 --> 15 and also ill try to check the ram settings. Ill come back here crying if it is not working after this :)

Thanks alot for your help!

Ah good. Then I think/assume you can forget about power supply.

Try find out exactly what memory modules you have. Timings, voltage should be written on them. Punch numbers in bios.

I have 4x1gb modules pc6400 modules which can only run at lower than default speed because there are 4 of them. 2 can run at correct speed. A chipset/memory chip issue. Memtest86+ will pass with 4, Vista and applications not ;) Besides that voltage and timings are wrongly detected because Corsair dont change SPD, what bios use for detection. Can be tricky. You have 3 modules? So they are placed correctly?

On some old motherboards, i mean very old, it was not always enough to "clear cmos" - even that could be buggy. Especially when changing cpu. So you had to pull out battery to bios or click/fix the cmos reset button jumper. Old story but who knows. Look it up in manual or see here http://www.abit.com.tw/faq/index.htm

One other thing I have no clue about is how Vista reacts to new cpu. I would guess it could not care less and just adjust some IDs. New motherboard with new chipset might require some preparation.

You dont have problems except in OS right? You run any Abit "tuning/tweaker" software in background? Anything tinkering with hardware?

If you have a Linux/Ubuntu/whatever LiveCD it would be interesting to see how long that runs. If mystery hardware problem even Linux is affected :)

dk70 has some good advice. Try downloading Fedora or Ubuntu (both Linux) and boot into that too see if you get the same error. If so, then it is for sure hardware.

I think i got to the bottom of this now.

It seems that my motherboard does not support the processor after all because it is Brisbane not Windsor. This i found out after reading more carefully Abits cpu-support list. So i changed the multiplier to 15x and it's now running 3000mhz stable. The thing that is bothering me is that it should go 3100mhz according to tech specs :).

Well to be honest, you are never going to notice the 10MHz difference. Don't worry about and just be happy you don't need a new mobo.

Nice, never thought of that. There are even 3 types of this beast!

Wont spoil the joy but how can it run well at 3000 and not 3100? Does bios somehow screw up by using higher multiplier, or were you mistaken and higher is not available? Not avail. i can understand. Dont matter that much - you also went for 2x512kb Brisbane cache and not 2x1mb Windsor so performance you dont care about ;)

Not a suggestion, only a thought, but you could increase fsb in Windows via software. How some fix stupid bios. Search for cpu-fsb clockgen or something. Find an overclocker forum if not any luck here - can definitely be done. Nvidias own system thingy can do it most likely.

So who ever has the rights mark this as solved.

And don't worry, that 100Mhz difference will never be missed.

You may want to consider giving dk70 some rep. He had some great suggestions.
