desperatly need help with installing Vista64

Okay got my machine put together and if I power up with the V64 SP1 full retail disk in the drive I get the bar that says windows is loading files and then the bar fills up and my computer just sits there and won't go any further. I don't get an error mssg or anything it just seems to freeze at this point. Things I've tried so far include

• I had 8 gigs of memory installed so first I removed 4 gigs, got the same results.

• then removed another 2 gigs so the system was running on 2 gigs, again the same result

• I know there is a newer bios but so far have had no luck in creating a set of dos disks to boot from to flash it that way. Will have to yank stuff from the new computer to boot up my old system to try once more to make one.

• Tried to make a usb boot device and set my bios to boot from that but it fails to boot. it fails to work as well. Its very fustraiting.

• I checked in the bios and it see's all my new unformated drives and my cd/dvd drives as well as my usb thumb drive and my drive in an external enclosure.

• Changed the boot order to various options to no avail

• Used nero to burn a bootablr cd. it boots but then after it loads up it hangs at a point where its doing something concerning LFN

I hope someone can offer me some good advice on what to do.

How long have you let it sit? I know my install required patience. Start it up, then go watch tv for a half hour, then check on it. If it is still loading, then give it a little longer. If it is still not working, then do something else. Try resetting the CMOS on your mobo, and unplug all non essential Hardware.

Why do you have 8gb of ram for a 32-bit OS? Anyways, try 1GB of ram. I think some vista install are picky about how much ram is there.

No, he is installing a x64 bit system... Read the post a bit more carefully. Thanks for trying to help though.

Well still no joy in mudtown today.

Things I have done since the last post:

• Finally dug out an old dos disk and updated the MB's bios. Bios detects all 3 of my new 1T unformated hd's as well as my 2 dvd drives. Set the bios to boot from CD and again got the "windows loading files" bar which fills up completely and then it just sits. Went away for an entire hour and no change.

• In case the X64 install DVD was bad went ahead and tried the Vistax32bit dvd and get the same result. Says loading files/fills up the bar and then just sits - no errors or anything

• I also have the Windows 7 beta and thought "what the heck" and booted with that in the drive. Got the loading windows files bar which filled right up and then screen changed to say "starting windows" and thats where its still at 30 minutes later.

Beginning to runout of ideas

Try using a different CD/DVD drive. Could be a bad drive...

I had a similar problem when building my wifes computer.
It took 2 hours to get to the point where it had the the green bars going across the screen and then about another hour to get to the screen where it was asking for me to chose the languge .
And it turned out to be the mother board was at fault she had a asrock board i swaped it for a asus board and windows was loaded in no time at all.

I think one of my new drives was bad. I unpluged them all and then tried just the seagate drive and didn't work, Then unplugged it and plugged in one of the WD drives and am posting this via Windows 7 so go figure

My Computer

Would that Seagate happen to be a barracuda drive?

Seagate Fail.

well I managed to get 7 installed and then on a seperate partition I put a copy of Vista X6.

2 minor problems if someone could help me:

• In the Win 7 OS it see's my usb devices just fine but when I plug in a flash drive in Vistax64 it doesnt see the drive, any sugestions?

• I also seem to recall reading here somewhere on how to extend the activation time period by doing a registry edit. Could someone post me a link? I tried to search but had no luck on my own

Yes I do but was hesitant over actually activating in case I had to switch back to my old computer was all. Now if I could just solve my USB issues I'll be more or less sitting pretty
