Crash autoexec.bat

:sleepy:I assume I picked up a virus. My comp says the autoexec.bat file cannot be found.
The window sockets are not operating.
When I hit the F10 key all the entries are gone. I have vista and i have the operating disc that came with it, however it does not work in the drive. It pops up and says to boot from cd or dvd press any key, then it goes back to the blue windows screen with my icons. I cannot do anything.
How do i format the hd so i can reinstall windows.
thanks

Hi rose181, welcome to the board.

Try to see if you are able to boot into safe mode by click on F8 several times. Once you got into safe mode, go to system restore and pick a really early restore point and restore the computer.

Or, on some computer, when you first boot up, it will give you a choice for a few seconds to let you pick an option of system restoration to the original state. Do that to see if helps.

Post back and let us know how it goes. We then start from there.

I am sorry I don't follow you. But, are you able to click on start button and get into Control Panel. If you can go to Backup and Restore and perform restoration.

If not, you may have to reinstall Vista. Since you have the operating system disk, put the disk in the optical drive and turn off computer. Then turn it back on to let it boot from the OS disk. Follow the instruction and install Vista.

If it didn't work, you are looking at hardware problems. Good luck.
