Accidently Removed Malware setting in Start up

Help!

I accidently in the Windows Defender, Software Explorer, Start up Programmes, removed the 'Malware ' detection!! Following that, I had a security note in the Notification field that it was not switched on!

I would appreciate any advice on how to reinstate it.

Thanks Alan

Re: Accidently Removed Malware setting in Start up

I have no such entry in my Software Explorer. Can you clarify what this was?

Re: Accidently Removed Malware setting in Start up

Thanks for the prompt reply.

I am new to and Vista etc. I was trying to follow a tutorial to speed up the Start up.

I saw the word 'Malware' and thought it was uneccessary as I seemed to connect it with Ad-Aware which I installed today and thought it had been put in? (I should have disabled it, not delete).

It was the Security Center warning that made me think I had made a booboo!

Alan

Are you running any other antivirus program?

Re: Accidently Removed Malware setting in Start up

I am running AVG (paid version).

PS.Would this turn off Windows Firewall? I have just checked, and found that it is turned off! Is it possible that AVG turns the Firewall off in favour of its own?

Re: Accidently Removed Malware setting in Start up

Exactly how did you do to remove this item?
Is it defender that give this warning?
Yes 3rd party firewalls regularly turn off the Vista firewall. You only need one.

Re: Accidently Removed Malware setting in Start up

This is how I got to the un intended deletion.

Windows Defender - Tools - Software Explorer - Startup Programmes.

This is where I chose to tinker!!

As I installed Ad-Aware today. I seem to remember putting a tick in a box regarding Malware.

PS. Maybe it wasn't so important. It was the 'Warning' that made me think!

Re: Accidently Removed Malware setting in Start up

As long as AVG is running fine, I do not think this is anything worrying.
It was some years since I used Ad-aware, but I think it probably installs something to run memory resident. You do not want that as it may interfere with AVG. There could be some settings in ad-aware you could turn off, just to get everything consistent.

Re: Accidently Removed Malware setting in Start up

Thanks for your prompt and helpful support. I promise not to tinker where I am not sure of what I am doing.

I will sign this thread off now.
