problem with usb sticks

Hello
I have recently installed vista ultimate x64 on a new machine:
GA-MA770-S3
Athlon X64 5400+
4 GB kingston 1066

Everything is perfect except a terrible problem with my
usb2 sticks. I cant copy large files ( > 500 MB) to any of them.
All the sticks are formatted to FAT32 and working perfectly to
other machines with xp installed. Never had any problem with them.

Vista starts copying the file to the usb. After a while (40 - 50%) it stops for a
minute or two and then an error displays saying something like
file c:\documents ....\filename no longer exists. The led on my usb
stick continues to blink like crazy and it stops blinking only if i remove it
no matter how long I wait (hours).

This does not happen with small files. Also in event log I see something
about an error during a caching operation.

I have tried the following:
I reformatted my sticks to ntfs. Same problem
I have checked "optimize for performance". Same problem

I have installed all updates from microsoft. I also googled a lot
and I have found similar problems but no solution.
Any help please? I dont want to go back to XP since I loved this new OS.
Thanks.

Reformat to FAT32 system which supports up to 4 GB. The file system will fully support the whole system, and then you should try it again. Also check if your USB stick has one of those special programs, which limits the size of each file.

I'm not sure thats true... I have an 8gig flash, and I think it is FAT32 (though I am not sure). I could be wrong. I also would not think that something like U3 would limit the file transfer size...

To fix the problem:
Have you tried this with multiple Flash Drives? Have you tried it in multiple ports?

We are going to narrow this down somehow!

Hello and thanks for your replies.

The usb sticks are formatted to FAT32 and as I said I have already tried with NTFS.

The sticks are kingston datatraveller 4 GB and 8 GB.

I will try with a different brand and let you know.

I also have a Kingston Datatraveler 8GB and I usually have a problem when I use it with Vista, I don't usually copy large files but the few times I have had to do this, I have had to reboot, get into my XP OS and do it there because Vista just plain refuses to cooperate.

If I try to Format the thumb drive while in Vista it takes forever to do so, XP does it in less than a minute.

I feel your pain, unfortunately... I have no solution but to, either compress the file or split into lesser sizes.

This is interesting, because I have an 8 gig flash, and it works perfectly. I have copied huge files (all 8 gigs) onto it flawlessly. It could just be the flash drive.... Try it with another.

I have only XP to try with. With XP it works fine. No problem.
With Vista I cant even format it. All my Kingston usb sticks dont work.
I will try other brands and let you know.

Hello again.
I think I have found the problem.
It' s the AMD SB700 chipset on the motherboard.
I have installed XP just to check it out and same problem
happens. Doesn't like my usb sticks

Now I have to find a solution for that.
Well at least it's not vista to blame :D.

Anyway thanks everyone on this forum for your replies.

Yes it could indeed be your mobo...

Have you tried re-installing your MBoard drivers ? ?

Another thing you can try is in Device Manager right click ALL instances of USB hubs and ports and select remove/uninstall...
They will be re-installed automatically upon re-boot.
Have only the neccessary USB devices hooked up when you try this...
