for a coupla months now but it finally got to me last night, my Vista 32bit PC is hogging my physical memory on bootup---seems like forever. my light on front is constantly on. i ran through a lot of tests last night to see whats up. i did see major spikes in my resources moniter. but i could not see or find what was useing it up. my physical memory showed 65% usage.

i managed to do some windows updates and reboot which helped. i also ran chkdsk for my C hard drive.(i have 3 hard drives total). since it rebooted without me there, i assume the C hard drive may be ok.

still, somethibg is hogging my memory. I have a HP Pavilion 5000 with 2 gigs memory. maybe time for more memory? thx

I hate to tell you what's hogging your memory...

Vista.

My laptop w/4 gigs uses about 1.7 gigs "at idle", my desktop w/6 gigs uses over 2... (both 64 bit)

It's why you'll notice that pretty much all new machines sold now have 4 gigs installed.

Yes, more memory will probably help a lot, and it's a reasonably cheap solution. For 32 bit Vista, more than 4 gigs won't be useful... --ch

1.7 GB @ idle? Is that with or without programs running?

Just WinMail and a browser. OTOH, there are tons of things running that I didn't ask for. Some of them are Vista, others are "accessories" loaded in there by HP, and a couple are services that a couple of my programs install and start with Windows (even under XP) even if the actual program isn't running.

On this desktop (a custom unit, so no manufacturer bloatware), I currently have 76 processes running - and only three programs open - Taskmanager, WinMail and Firefox - plus 5 sidebar gadgets.

WinMail is using 330 megs (I have a number of newsgroups plus a reasonably large set of local folders). The various instances of svchost are using over 400M, the AV is using maybe 150... and those are just the big ones. --ch

i just got sweetie a Dell Inspiron for xmas. of course it's new but litterally flies at 64bit and 4gigs of ram. so you think it's time for me to upgrade to a 64bit pc? i forgot my memory type but it's one step under 533DDR. adding anymore memory to that won't mean anything. geeez, and i've only had this one less than 2 years....:sa:

ok, i just remembered my HP Pavilion is 64bit with the OEM 32bit Vista installed. So if i upgrade to 64bit windows , i can then upgrade to more memory. now, how do i get the 64bit Vista upgrade? is this an old topic here or is there a way to upgrade without costing an arm and a leg? thanks--BR
