That slow memory burn...

Start my desktop, let it boot up, settle in until I hear the HD stop cranking...

Look in TM: top memory use are svchost with one instance of around 150M and another one around 65M, DWM at about 35M, sidebar at about 30M... Memory meter says around 28% used (out of 6Gigs). So, work a little , type a couple of documents, couple of e-mails, do a web search or two, read the newsgroups... an hour or so goes by... the memory usage slowly climbs up past 35% and on up into the 40's... Stabilizes out at around 45% over a couple of hours. Check back in TM, the original svchost has grown to 315 (doubled in size) the second one about 90, the sidebar has gotten up to 80, etc... Everything just keeps going up.

Similar behavior on my laptop w/4 Gigs. Both with Vista x64 U.

What's it doing here? Storing data? Seems very odd... --ch

The longer a M$ OS runs, the more problems it accumulates....

Probably just data storing. Thats why you have 6 gigs or RAM. And why it needs 2 gigs to run properly (or close).

I would not worry about it, but for more detail, check out the Process Explorer by Sysinternals.
