Some hard drives not spinning down

Hello forum,

I have 8 SATA drives (4 in a PCI Promise SATA controller and 4 in the motherboard controller) in my Vista Ultimate 64, and I would like to keep them spinned down most the time.
I use power saving but only the PCI drives are shutting down after x minutes, the motherboard drives are still on.
In windows XP worked fine.

I also noticed that when I delete a file, the drives spin up again.
Could be any windows service interfering?

I have all the hardware drivers well updated.

Any help would be appreciated

Hello liher and welcome to the forums.

Did you check to make sure that the PCI Promise SATA Controller is supported in Vista x64? That could be a problem.

Second, that card may not work with the mobo, though I don't see why not.

Third, 8 SATA drives is a lot! Wow.

Before upgrading the NVIDIA nForce serial ATA controllers I am now able to change from PIO to DMA mode but they still not spinning down.
The Promise drivers are also supported for 64.

anyway the latest drivers are from 2007, quite old maybe

Interesting. Is it enabled in your BIOS?

The SATA controller. Sometimes, the BIOS could mess with it or something else maybe. So we are just eliminating possible solutions until we find the right one.

Let us know if you need help in the BIOS.

In the bios everything is fine, as I said, all the drives where shutting down in winXP

I disabled a lot of services and still not working. I think it is a driver issue.

btw, I have a 4200 Athlon X2 with 1gb ram with 6100 nvidia graphics and Vista is quite slow... what do you suggest to upgrade first?

My Computer

RAM and Video Card. A 7 series will run Vista fine, but a 6 might strugle. The RAM first though. I would just get rid of that stick and put in two one gig sticks or two two gig sticks. You are running x64, so you can go over 4 gigs. Put that much in for sure.
